Be warned: this contains spoilers for Black Phone 2. The film tells a complete story while also cleverly expanding the world established in the first movie, potentially setting up future sequels. Black Phone 2 checks in with Finny and Gwen four years after the original, exploring how they are coping with the trauma caused by the Grabber – and a new attack from a now-supernatural enemy.
The ending of Black Phone 2 sees the villain, the Grabber, defeated, suggesting his influence will now diminish. Despite this, people are already wondering where a third Black Phone movie could go. Here are six potential ideas for a sequel, including one that an actor from the film has hinted at.
6. Black Phone 3 Could Pit The Grabber Against New Teens
As a big fan of The Black Phone movies, I’ve been thinking about a potential third film, and I think bringing back the Grabber could be really interesting. Even though he seemed finished at the end of Black Phone 2 – frozen and defeated – imagining him coming back to terrorize a new group of kids feels like a natural progression. The second movie did a great job of showing Gwen and Finny finally moving past the trauma he inflicted, but that doesn’t mean the Grabber’s story has to be completely over. It would be compelling to see how they deal with his return, or how a new generation faces him.
With the Grabber now existing as a supernatural being, Black Phone 3 has the opportunity to bring him back. This could establish him as a modern-day Freddy Krueger, particularly if he continues to target teenagers at the Alpine Lake Camp. The camp location also conveniently allows for the introduction of new characters who can become victims of the killer.
This might be how the show continues after Finny and Gwen, turning the Grabber into a bigger, ongoing villain instead of just someone who targeted them. It could also bring Armando and Mustang back as camp staff, giving them a more central role in future conflicts with the Grabber.
5. Black Phone 3 Could Follow The Grabber To Hell
A possible way to revive the Grabber in Black Phone 2 could involve a journey to hell. The film establishes that hell is a real place that corrupts souls and sends them back to Earth. Interestingly, Ethan Hawke has indicated this is the route he’d prefer for the character.
Ethan Hawke told Entertainment Weekly he’d be fascinated to explore the backstory of the Grabber, the villain from the film. He hopes a potential third movie would delve into what turned him into the person he is and what motivates his actions, essentially telling the story of his origins as a character study.
Exploring the Grabber’s perspective would be the most compelling direction for the story. After two movies, his motives and background remain largely unknown, and uncovering those details would add a fascinating new layer to the existing narrative, moving the focus away from Finny and Gwen.
4. Black Phone 3 Could Expand Gwen’s Supernatural Skills

In the first Black Phone movie, Gwen was introduced as a psychic, and the sequel, Black Phone 2, really develops that side of her, turning her into a powerful dream walker. During the intense final scene, Gwen faces the Grabber within a strange and surreal dream world, demonstrating impressive control over her abilities. A third Black Phone movie could explore Gwen’s powers even more deeply.
As Gwen gets better at controlling her powers, she might start dedicating herself to helping others – perhaps by solving mysteries or rescuing people. The discovery that her mother also has these abilities hints that Gwen isn’t alone, and that there could be others like her. This opens up exciting possibilities for stories filled with drama and conflict.
There’s a possibility Gwen’s abilities could become difficult to manage. Although she controlled them well during her fight with the Grabber, she might lose the ability to restrain her increasing powers—or even be drawn to using them for personal gain. This could lead to a more complicated story for Gwen, moving beyond her current role as purely a hero.
3. Black Phone 3 Could Pit Finny And Gwen Against Other Threats
Universal Pictures
Though Black Phone 2 primarily centers on Finny, Gwen, and the Grabber, it subtly hints at a larger supernatural world, potentially setting up more expansive sequels. Future stories could explore other demonic or holy entities, building on the film’s suggestion that both heaven and hell exist.
A potential Black Phone 3 could take Finny and Gwen on adventures to different parts of the world, where they’d face off against new and dangerous demons or ghosts who are harming people. This could also create tension between them, as Gwen might be more enthusiastic about using their powers to fight evil than the more hesitant Finny.
This approach could establish Black Phone as Blumhouse’s equivalent to The Conjuring series, positioning Finny and Gwen as iconic heroes in contemporary horror. It also opens the door to a potentially endless series of films, with each new story functioning as a self-contained horror tale linked by the recurring presence of Gwen and Finny.
2. Black Phone 3 Could Introduce Other Demonic Forces
Following the intriguing idea of Finny and Gwen continuing as supernatural investigators, a third Black Phone movie could explore the details of hell and the origins of the Grabber’s powers. Ethan Hawke suggests focusing on the Grabber’s transformation, but another option would be to define the rules of hell within the film’s universe.
The threats could come from newly awakened, angry ghosts determined to continue their destructive behavior, or from demons manipulating events to harm people like Finny and Gwen. It’s also possible that the power which resurrected the Grabber also controls other spirits, giving them an endless supply of potential enemies to use.
Though the evil powers in Black Phone 2 aren’t always visible, a potential sequel could show them becoming much stronger. One idea is that Gwen might face another psychic—but this one would be working with the demons and killers, instead of fighting alongside Gwen and Finny for what’s right.
1. Black Phone 3 Could Force Finny And Gwen’s Future Families To Confront The Grabber
A possible direction for Black Phone 3 is to jump ahead in time, allowing Finny and Gwen to age before returning in a new film. This would give the creators more time to develop the story and also fits naturally within the established world of the movies.
It’s been four years since The Black Phone, and honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the next movie, Black Phone 2, has an even bigger gap before it comes out. I think it would actually make sense – it’d give them a chance to introduce new characters and maybe move on from some of the older ones, all while still setting up a good future for Finny and Gwen. It feels like a natural way to keep the story going.
As a critic, I’m really intrigued by where this story could go. It seems like Gwen and Finny are going to be forced to face their pursuer, the Grabber, even as their lives pull them in different directions – think college, jobs, just growing up and moving on. And I suspect this separation will really put their relationship to the test, highlighting just how strong their family bond truly is in some unexpected and dramatic ways.
If enough time passed, the Grabber could start targeting Finny and Gwen’s children, turning himself into a recurring, family-threatening figure. This would also make the revelation that he killed their mother even more disturbing, as his attacks on their children would become all the more frightening.
A third Black Phone movie could update the villain, the Grabber, to the present day. This would move away from the first film’s retro style and potentially establish the Grabber as a lasting figure in contemporary horror. It could also continue the story begun in Black Phone 2 and open up possibilities for future installments in the series.
