Netflix frequently creates sequels to its popular films, and even acquires them from other studios. We’ve seen this with series like Knives Out and the Fear Street trilogy (which Netflix purchased), as well as continuations of Extraction and Enola Holmes. Recently, they released a trailer for Troll 2, a sequel to one of their most successful international films. Now, Netflix is moving forward with a sequel to a different animated hit – not the one most people would expect.
During the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns, when movie theaters were closed, many studios sold films to Netflix. They needed money, and Netflix wanted to attract viewers. One of those films was The Mitchells vs. The Machines, an animated movie from Sony Pictures Animation created by the producers of Spider-Verse, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Now, Netflix and Sony have announced that a sequel is coming six years later.
The Mitchells vs the Machines Sequel Confirmed After Five Years
I just read some exciting news! Apparently, Netflix and Sony are really teaming up for the Mitchells vs. the Machines sequel, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are back as producers – that’s fantastic! It looks like Mike Rianda, who directed the first one, won’t be involved this time around, but Guillermo Martinez, the head of story from the original, is stepping up to co-direct. He’s pairing with JP Sans, who worked on The Bad Guys 2. And the writing team? Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin from The Great North! I’m really looking forward to seeing what they come up with.
When The Mitchells vs. the Machines premiered on Netflix in 2021, it was a huge success, winning eight Annie Awards and being nominated for an Academy Award. Although a sequel took a while to develop, we recently highlighted it as a film with franchise potential. Now, it represents a significant addition to Netflix’s offerings – a science fiction series unlike anything currently available from other streaming services.
Pixar, known for its heartwarming stories, has recently tried its hand at science fiction with films like Lightyear and Elio, but those haven’t performed well, effectively ending any chance of sequels. This doesn’t look good for their upcoming film, Hoppers. However, The Mitchells vs. the Machines is different. It has a strong sci-fi concept – an AI turning machines against humans – that could easily support future films. Plus, its distinctive animation style sets it apart from everything else out there. This sequel is a welcome addition to Netflix, giving their streaming library something truly unique.
While a sequel to The Mitchells vs. the Machines is in the works, there’s a catch: it will likely be a long wait. Production isn’t expected to begin until early 2026, meaning the movie probably won’t hit Netflix until 2027 – and even that’s not certain. It’s great news that another film is happening, but fans will have to be patient.
