A beloved anime from the pages of Shonen Jump is getting a fresh reboot after 40 years! It’s been an exciting year for fans of classic Shonen Jump series. Despite some changes and cancellations happening with the magazine itself, many older favorites are being celebrated with new versions. We’ve seen several classics return for milestone anniversaries, and now another one is joining them.
Motoei Shinzawa’s High School! Kimengumi began as a manga in Shonen Jump in 1980 and continued to develop even after the original anime finished in 1987. Now, 40 years after the anime’s conclusion—and even longer since the manga started—High School! Kimengumi is getting a brand new anime series, reimagining its characters for a new generation. A first look at the rebooted TV series was revealed earlier this week.
High School! Kimengumi Returns With New Reboot Anime
To celebrate its 45th anniversary, the classic manga High School! Kimengumi is getting a new TV anime series. The show is set to premiere in January 2026 and will be directed by Kazuaki Seki, marking his first time directing an anime after working on live-action projects. Takashi Nishikawa will be the animation director, Shigeru Murakoshi will write the scripts, and Yuka Abe will handle the character designs. The animation is being produced by Seven.
Night Tempo is composing the new music for the anime, and Slow Curve is producing the entire project. The main voice actors have also been confirmed: Tomokazu Seki will play Rei Ichido, Shunsuke Takeuchi will voice Go Reietsu, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka is Kiyoshi Shusse, Chiaki Kobayashi will be Jin Daima, Kikunosuke Toya is Dai Monohoshi, Haruka Shiraishi will voice Yui Kawa, and Ikumi Hasegawa will play Chie Uru. This comeback is significant, as the series hasn’t received this much attention in a long time.
What Is High School! Kimengumi?
Originally created by Motoei Shinzawa as 3-Nen Kimengumi for Shonen Jump, the series centered around a unique club of middle school students – the “Kimengumi” – and their funny adventures. It became so popular that it continued as High School! Kimengumi when the characters entered high school. The series was adapted into an anime with 86 episodes that aired in the late 1980s, and now a complete reboot is coming out next year.
I’m a huge fan of this series – it’s definitely one of the more unusual ones Shonen Jump has put out! I’m really curious to see if its humor still lands with audiences today. But with the reboot coming up, it’s so exciting that a whole new generation will get to discover it! What are your thoughts? Let’s chat about it over in the ComicBook Forum!
