The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have faced many challenges, and the recent relaunch of the comic series by Jason Aaron and Juan Ferreyra has been particularly difficult for them. The creative team concludes their run with issue #12, and they’ve left fans with a major surprise. This shocking reveal will significantly change the direction of the series and the Turtles themselves. Be warned: spoilers ahead if you haven’t read the latest issue!
As the Turtles fight Hale in his terrifying new form, they reconnect as brothers, and surprisingly, an army of rats joins the battle to help them. Feeling their father Splinter’s presence throughout their journey, they attempt a magical spell to bring him back from what seems to be a limbo between worlds. Although the spell appears to fail, the very last page reveals it was successful: Splinter has returned to life and is reunited with his sons.

The story’s roots are in the 2019 issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #100. In that issue, Splinter sacrificed himself to save his enemy, Oroku Saki, and prevent a disaster. While his death allowed the Turtles to succeed, it deeply impacted each of them, and this current storyline is exploring those emotional consequences.

Recently, the Turtles have been sensing Splinter’s presence, almost as if he’s been fighting with them. Donatello was particularly affected, to the point where he started talking to a dead rat as if it were Splinter—surprisingly, the rat helped keep him from falling apart. This comes to a head in issue #12, when the Turtles perform a spell hoping to locate Splinter, believing he might be trapped between life and death.
The spell successfully brought Splinter before them, but his words were garbled and unclear. Then, something went wrong, resulting in a sudden explosion that destroyed him. The Turtles were left believing Splinter had deliberately chosen to remain in the peaceful dimension he’d discovered, rather than return.
However, the green magical energy soon reappears elsewhere in the city, and we learn the story is being told by Splinter – who is surprisingly alive again, and feeling every bit of it. While his sons are unaware of his return, Kairai is, setting the stage for the events in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13, which hints at the introduction of a new assassin, Ujigami. Is this just a random occurrence? Possibly, but Splinter’s comeback likely has a deeper meaning, and it will be compelling to see how it unfolds.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #12 is in comic stores now.
