It started as a manga, then became a long-running anime in 1999, and now has a live-action series with a second season on the way. As one of the best-selling comics and most beloved anime series ever, One Piece can be daunting for new fans, particularly when starting with the anime. With over 1,145 episodes – covering more than 100 volumes of the original manga – and still continuing, it’s understandable why it might seem overwhelming.

Many anime series, including One Piece, include episodes that aren’t based on the original source material—often called “filler.” This happens because anime production can move faster than the creation of the manga they’re adapting, especially if the manga is still being written. Toei Animation, the studio behind One Piece, has used filler episodes several times over the years. Below, you’ll find a list of these optional story arcs that weren’t written by the original author. Several full-length movies are based on the world of One Piece, but they don’t always follow the official storyline of the anime or manga. However, some films are considered part of the official story. One Piece Strong World, for example, introduced a character originally created by the series author, Eiichiro Oda, who later appeared in the manga itself. Similarly, One Piece Film Red features the character Uta, who was also designed by Oda, making it a notable addition to the franchise.

Several movies have revisited stories from the original manga, and one full season was dedicated to remaking the “Fish-man Island” arc, which first appeared in 2011. The original arc spanned 57 episodes, but the 2024 remake condensed it to 21 episodes with updated animation and a faster pace, bringing it closer to the manga’s rhythm and improving the overall viewing experience.

The Pacing in ‘One Piece’ and Alternatives

According to a guide on Reddit, One Pace shaves about 140 hours off the original anime runtime, even without counting the time saved by skipping entire filler episodes. Of course, watching One Pace is completely up to you – you can always watch the regular anime and use the guide to skip the filler if you prefer.

Even though One Piece still has a lot of episodes, skipping the filler arcs makes the main story easier to follow. Some filler episodes interrupt important storylines from the manga. However, filler episodes can be fun because they showcase the great chemistry of the Straw Hat crew, and they can offer a break from the more serious manga-adapted plot.
