The fifth and final season of Stranger Things will be missing one of its most popular characters. While the original group – including Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Hopper (David Harbour), and their friends – will return to defend their town from evil and government interference, a character who quickly became a fan favorite in season four won’t be joining them. Despite widespread speculation, the show’s creators have confirmed this character will not appear in the final season.
Matt Duffer, one of the creators of Stranger Things, recently spoke with Empire Magazine about what to expect in the show’s fifth and final season. Fans have been hoping to see Joseph Quinn’s character, Eddie Munson, return, but Duffer cautioned against it. “I love that Joe Quinn is leading people on!” he said, “But no, Eddie is definitely dead.”
Why It Was Important To Emphasize That Eddie Munson Is Dead In Stranger Things

Following his character’s death in Stranger Things Season 4, many fans have hoped Eddie Munson might return in the show’s final season. While the actor who played Eddie has hinted at a possible comeback, the creators, the Duffer brothers, should shut down those rumors now. Leaving the door open would likely disappoint viewers, as Eddie’s fans would be upset if he didn’t reappear. It’s better to manage expectations now so audiences can fully enjoy the final season knowing his story has concluded, rather than hoping for something that won’t happen.
Eddie Munson was a unique and outgoing student at Hawkins High School, known for leading the school’s Dungeons & Dragons club, the “Hellfire Club.” He quickly befriended Mike and Dustin, but became wrongly accused of murder. The police labeled him as part of a supposed “Satanic cult” before he ultimately helped his friends fight against Vecna. During this final battle, set to Metallica’s “Master of Puppets,” Eddie bravely sacrificed himself to save them. Tragically, the town never knew he was a hero, continuing to believe he was a killer.
It’s important to consider how Matt Duffer described Eddie Munson’s death. After confirming Eddie was dead, Duffer added, “Sadly, RIP. He’s fully under that ground.” This phrasing is curious, especially since the show’s monsters come from a dimension called the Upside Down. Could this mean Eddie isn’t truly gone, and his friends might be able to find him there?
The Duffers likely clarified Will’s storyline to avoid fans expecting something that wouldn’t happen in the final season of Stranger Things. They also pointed out that Joseph Quinn, who played Eddie Munson, has been very busy filming other projects. In 2024, he appeared in Gladiator II and A Quiet Place: Day 1, and he has roles in the 2025 films Warfare and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. With a part also coming up in Avengers: Doomsday, Quinn’s schedule is extremely full.
The first part of Stranger Things Season 5 will premiere on Netflix on November 26, 2025.
