Recent teen shows offer plenty of thrills, but Disney Channel really excelled at Halloween movies in the late 90s and early 2000s, consistently releasing quality originals. If you’re looking for some nostalgic, not-too-scary spooky season viewing, here are five films that millennials will love and new audiences will enjoy too. These movies cover all the classic Halloween creatures – witches, mummies, vampires, and more – and they’re all available to stream on Disney+.
5) Twitches

Tia and Tamera Mowry were already well-known stars thanks to their popular TV show, Sister, Sister, and other TV movies. That’s why there was a lot of excitement for Twitches when it first aired on Disney Channel in 2005. The movie stars the sisters as Alex and Camryn, twin sisters who were separated at birth and raised by different families. On their 21st birthday, they discover they have magical powers and are reunited. They must then use these newfound abilities to save their birth mother and the magical kingdom they come from. Twitches stands out as one of Disney’s more visually impressive fantasy films, and it also celebrates girl power and the dreams of teenage viewers. The movie was a hit and led to a follow-up film, Twitches Too.
4) Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire

Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire boasts a clever premise and a surprisingly stacked cast for a Disney Channel Original Movie. The film follows the three Hansen kids, Chelsea, Taylor, and Adam, who will do anything to get their mom, divorcée Lynette, out of the house so they can attend their respective social engagements despite being grounded. Yet when they realize they may have inadvertently set Lynette up with a blood-sucking monster, it’s up to the Hansen kids to save her. Not only does the cast feature 90s sitcom royalty with Caroline Rhea of Sabrina the Teenage Witch playing Lynette and Charles Shaughnessy from The Nanny as her vampiric suitor, but Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire is also one of Laura Vandervoort’s first credits, who played Supergirl on the WB/CW show Smallville.
3) Don’t Look Under the Bed

Disney’s Don’t Look Under the Bed is one of the scariest movies they’ve ever made, leaning closest to a true horror film. The story follows Frances, a smart teenager, who is wrongly accused of causing trouble in her town – by the Boogeyman! She teams up with Larry, an imaginary friend, and together they embark on a frightening adventure. The film ultimately reminds us that it’s important to hold onto our imagination as we grow up. It’s still genuinely scary today, and it also featured positive non-binary representation, which was very progressive for its time.
2) Under Wraps

The movie Under Wraps features friendly monsters who aren’t scary – they just want to find love and peace. When three kids accidentally bring a mummy back to life, they have until midnight on Halloween to return him and his beloved to their resting place, or he’ll disappear forever. The film is packed with funny moments as the friends try to hide their new mummy, named Harold, from everyone in town. It’s a sweet and fun Halloween story that’s stayed popular for decades, leading Disney to create a reboot and a sequel over twenty years later. However, fans looking for a nostalgic experience will likely prefer the original Under Wraps over the newer films.
1) Halloweentown

Every fall, our family loves to re-watch Halloweentown. The movie centers on Marnie Piper, a girl who often argues with her cautious mother, Gwen. Luckily, Marnie has the support of her quirky grandmother, Aggie, who only visits on Halloween. When Marnie discovers she’s a witch and needs to start training right away or lose her powers, she secretly follows Aggie to the magical town of Halloweentown, bringing her younger siblings Dylan and Sophie along. Together, they uncover a dangerous plot and learn to use their magic as a family to protect their loved ones and save the town. It’s a truly magical and heartwarming story about family, which is likely why this 1998 Disney Channel Original Movie became a classic and led to three sequels.
