As a comic and animation fan, I’ve always appreciated how Invincible doesn’t pull any punches. It’s a series that really shows you characters can stay dead, and it’s a huge part of what makes it so impactful. We follow Mark Grayson, who’s trying his best to be a hero and protect everyone he cares about, but he faces a ton of loss along the way. Those losses really shape him into the hero he becomes, making him realize just how precious and fragile life is. Honestly, it’s brutal – we’ve seen so many heroes, villains, and innocent people fall in this story, all while Mark is battling supervillains and the truly terrifying Viltrumite Empire.
The Invincible comics are full of powerful enemies and threats, and unfortunately, not everyone survives – even heroes. Here are some of the most heartbreaking deaths from the series that deeply affected Mark Grayson and challenged him as a hero.
7) Future Immortal

For millennia, Immortal has battled evil, but a trip to the future reveals a dark possibility for his fate. He learns that Immortal will one day become king of Earth, but his endless life will slowly drive him insane. He transforms into a cruel tyrant, senselessly killing people, desperately hoping someone will end his suffering. When Mark travels back in time, Immortal attacks him, pleading to be killed. After a difficult struggle, Mark finally grants his request, beheading him. It’s a heartbreaking end for such a noble hero – an act of mercy, but also the first time Mark has ever taken a life.
6) Battle Beast

Battle Beast is driven solely by his love of fighting. This desire has made him fight alongside and against Mark at different times. He even joined the Coalition of Planets in their war against the Viltrumite Empire, hoping to find someone strong enough to defeat him in a final, honorable battle. He ultimately got his wish when he was sent to fight and kill Thragg, the exiled Viltrumite leader. Their fight lasted for days, and though Thragg won, crushing Battle Beast’s heart, it was the glorious death Battle Beast always wanted. It was still upsetting for fans to see such a popular character die, and it felt especially disrespectful that Thragg then made a cape from Battle Beast’s skin.
5) Cecil Stedman

Cecil Stedman, the often-ambiguous leader of the Global Defense Agency, dedicated his life to protecting the world from danger. No one, not even Cecil, could have predicted the attack that came next. When Mark returned to Earth after being betrayed by Robot, he rushed to warn Cecil. However, the warning came too late. Robot viciously attacked and killed Cecil, slitting his throat and crushing his skull. Despite making some difficult choices over the years, Cecil always strived to protect humanity and didn’t deserve such a brutal end after so many years of service.
4) Shapesmith

Shapesmith, a quirky Martian, joined the Guardians of the Globe after traveling to Earth on a rocket. He quickly became a brave and funny hero, known for his ability to shapeshift. Tragically, Shapesmith was killed by a former friend, Robot, who decided to conquer the world. Robot systematically eliminated heroes who might stand in his way, and Shapesmith was one of them. In his final moments, Shapesmith, torn apart and crying, desperately asked Robot why he was doing this. Robot responded coldly that it wasn’t personal before destroying Shapesmith completely, ending his life.
3) Oliver Grayson

As a critic, I’ve always found Oliver’s story deeply compelling, and his arc in the series is truly heartbreaking. He’s Mark’s half-brother, and being the son of Omni-Man meant he never quite belonged on Earth, struggling with his accelerated development and a very different worldview. He eventually found a home among the Coalition of Planets and built a family, which made what happened next even more devastating. He ended up walking a dangerous line as a double agent, seemingly loyal to Thragg but secretly working for Allen and the Coalition. When Thragg turned on Mark and his family, Oliver bravely tried to shield them, but tragically, Thragg killed him. What made his death hit so hard, though, is that we’ve seen Oliver grow from a baby, witnessing his struggles and development firsthand. It wasn’t just a death; it was the loss of a character we’d watched evolve, making it a genuinely shocking and impactful moment.
2) Omni-Man

Nolan Grayson, also known as Omni-Man, underwent a dramatic transformation throughout the Invincible comic series. Initially presented as Earth’s greatest hero, he shockingly revealed his true mission: to prepare the planet for conquest by the Viltrumite Empire. As the story progressed, Nolan became remorseful for the terrible things he’d done and for betraying his loved ones. He eventually rebelled against the Viltrumite Empire and ultimately claimed his place as their legitimate ruler. But when he spared the life of the previous ruler, Thragg, as an act of compassion, it proved to be a fatal mistake. Thragg later killed Nolan. In his final moments, Nolan asked his son, Mark, to take the throne and protect the Viltrumite people, a request Mark fulfilled, leading to an era of peace and prosperity for the Viltrumites.
1) Rex-Splode

Rex Splode starts as a flawed hero – confident to the point of arrogance, unfaithful to his girlfriend, Atom Eve, and having an affair with Dupli-Kate. A devastating battle with the Lizard League leaves him critically wounded and many of his fellow Guardians of the Globe dead or missing, prompting a major change in his personality. Rex begins a journey of self-improvement, becoming more understanding and working to repair his friendships. Tragically, his growth is cut short during the “Invincible War,” where he makes the ultimate sacrifice, destroying his own body to defeat an evil version of Invincible and save his team. Rex’s transformation and selfless act resonated deeply with fans, making him a fan favorite and leaving a lasting impact.
