Tulsa King Stars Break Down Jeremiah and Cole’s Shocking Reveal

The following contains spoilers for season 3, episode 6 of Tulsa King.

The latest episode of Tulsa King season 3 revealed a shocking and sad truth about the connection between Jeremiah Dunmire (Robert Patrick) and his son, Cole Dunmire (Beau Knapp). Following the surprising reveal, both actors have now spoken out about the core conflict driving their characters’ strained relationship.

Episode 6 of Tulsa King’s third season reveals the source of Jeremiah’s long-held resentment towards his son, Cole. A flashback shows that Jeremiah’s eldest son died in combat, and Cole was constantly measured against his deceased brother. This led Jeremiah to become increasingly angry with Cole for every mistake he made, feeling that the wrong son had survived. Cole’s choice to wear camouflage only makes things worse, as it constantly reminds Jeremiah of his first son.

In a recent interview with TV Insider, the actors talked about how their characters were affected by the recent tragedy and whether they can repair their relationship. Knapp revealed he developed a detailed personal history for his character, Cole, suggesting the situation is more complicated than viewers have seen.

He explained that his character’s motivations went beyond simply seeking his father’s approval. He felt Cole was also attempting to fill the void left by his brother. “He’s really trying to take his brother’s place, trying to win over his mother, and doing everything he can to please this man – or the man he used to know,” he clarified.

Patrick doesn’t think Cole will ever earn Jeremiah’s respect. He feels Jeremiah holds an impossibly high standard for anyone, especially Cole, who has repeatedly let him down. However, Patrick suggested Jeremiah might eventually recognize he’s being unfair, implying the character has some level of self-awareness.

A major turning point is coming up where Jeremiah will stop and recognize the mistake he was about to make. It’s a really clear moment for him, but also a vulnerable one. I’m not sure which episode it happens in, but it’s connected to my relationship with Cole. I don’t think Cole will ever understand, but I’ll have a realization that I’m starting to fall apart, because I’m under a lot of pressure.

New episodes of Tulsa King are released every Sunday on Paramount+.
