A classic game series from the original PlayStation (PS1) is coming to modern consoles. While the specific platforms haven’t been announced, it’s likely to include the PlayStation 5, and possibly the PS4, given the series’ history on Sony’s first console. We don’t yet know which consoles it will be on, when it will be released, or if the games will be released individually or as a collection. However, we do know it’s expected to arrive sometime between 2026 and 2027.
Gamers who fondly remember playing the original Battle Arena Toshinden games on the PlayStation 1 in the 1990s will be happy to hear they’re coming back. Edia has partnered with Takara to bring a collection of these 3D fighting games to today’s consoles and computers. The collection will include the first three titles: Battle Arena Toshinden, Battle Arena Toshinden 2, and Battle Arena Toshinden 3.
About the Games
It’s understandable if you haven’t heard of these PlayStation 1 games, as they were quite obscure, particularly outside of Japan. Still, their recent re-releases after 30 years show they have a dedicated following.

I first got into the Battle Arena Toshinden series way back in ’95 with the original game on PlayStation. It was amazing – one of the very first 3D fighters! While it didn’t quite become a huge mainstream hit like Tekken, it was still really cool and got a sequel almost immediately. Toshinden 2 actually started in arcades before coming to the PS1 in ’96, and then Toshinden 3 followed right after. Looking back, Toshinden was a real pioneer and even helped influence the Soulcalibur series. But honestly, it hasn’t really stayed relevant over the years. The last game, Toshinden 4, came out in 1999, and unfortunately, it’s not included in these new releases either. It’s a bit sad, but I still have fond memories of playing those early games!
It’s interesting that this was announced right after Tekken 3 was re-released on PlayStation 4 and 5. We’ve been seeing a lot of older games come back lately, and it seems like companies are digging deeper and deeper into their past titles to find things to re-release.
So, that’s my take on things! I’m always up for hearing what you guys think, so definitely leave a comment and let me know your thoughts. Or, if you want to dive deeper, come chat with us over on the ComicBook Forum – we’re always having a good discussion there!
