Microsoft is sticking to its plans for a new Xbox console, which Xbox president Sarah Bond describes as a high-end device. Given their partnership with Asus on the ROG Ally and Ally X handhelds, it’s likely the next Xbox will share some design and functionality with those portable systems.
Sources at Windows Central report the new Xbox will run a complete version of Windows, but designed for TVs and gaming. Players will automatically start in a full-screen Xbox mode, but will easily be able to switch to the standard Windows desktop to use other game stores like Steam and Battle.net, or even programs like Microsoft Office.
As Corden points out, getting started will feel much like using an Xbox console. You can stay within the Xbox environment if you prefer, without ever needing to use Windows. You’d only switch to Windows if you want to play games not normally available on Xbox, such as PlayStation games through Steam, games designed for mouse and keyboard like League of Legends, or older titles from platforms like GOG.
The next Xbox is rumored to offer access to a huge library of games, spanning many years of Xbox history, all in one place. It’s expected to play games from older Xbox consoles like the original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Plus, existing Xbox Series X/S games should look and run even better thanks to new features, though the next Xbox will also have games built specifically for its improved hardware.
The concept is certainly attractive – it promises a simpler PC gaming experience by removing annoyances like long loading times. However, the key question is whether the cost will be worth it for gamers who also want to easily play their PC and Xbox games on their TVs.
