On October 25th, the singer’s wife posted a touching message celebrating her 41st birthday, mentioning their recent trip to space together on a flight launched by Blue Origin, the aerospace company founded by Amazon’s creator.
Lauren shared on Instagram that it’s Katy Perry’s birthday, adding, “Oh, how I love you @katyperry.” She posted this while on a trip with Gayle King, Aisha Bowe (a former NASA rocket scientist), Amanda Nguyen (an activist), and Kerianne Flynn (a film producer).
The 55-year-old also shared a birthday message to Katy Perry, writing, “Happy birthday @katyperry I love you to space and back,” according to screenshots published by the Daily Mail.
Lauren and Katy had been friends for a long time before their historic spaceflight – the first time an all-female team had flown to space in over 60 years.
Jeff and Katy Perry’s ex-fiancé, Orlando Bloom, have taken several vacations together, most recently in July. This trip happened just over a week after news broke that Katy and Orlando—who share a 5-year-old daughter named Daisy Dove Bloom—had ended their nine-year relationship.

Oh my gosh, Lauren and Katy? They weren’t just astronauts thrown together! They were friends before this incredible mission, and it’s so amazing because it was the first time in over 60 years that an all-female crew went to space! I’ve been following their journey for ages, and knowing they had that bond before even launching just makes it even more special to me. It’s history in the making, and they’re making it together!

Jeff and Lauren recently celebrated their wedding in Venice, and afterwards, the couple hosted friends aboard Jeff’s yacht along Italy’s Amalfi Coast. Orlando was there, but his partner, Katy, couldn’t join as she was touring in Australia.
Katy posted photos from her trip to Australia on Instagram, and Lauren commented, “We miss you!”

Oh my gosh, Blue Origin! It’s seriously amazing. It was started by Jeff Bezos, you know, the guy from Amazon, back in 2000. Their headquarters are in Kent, Washington, and I’ve been following them forever. Basically, they want to use what space has to offer to help Earth, but also, and this is the best part, they want to get so many people living and working up there! I read on their website that they’re building rockets and engines you can reuse – which is brilliant, honestly – to make space travel cheaper and open it up to everyone, not just astronauts. Bezos himself said they’re aiming for ‘millions of people living and working in space!’ It’s just… incredible. I’m saving up, obviously! You need a $150,000 deposit just to reserve a seat, which is a lot, but totally worth it to be part of history, right?

Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket is named after Alan Shepard, the first American in space. It’s a reusable rocket designed to carry people on short trips to space. The capsule can hold six passengers, but it doesn’t need a pilot – the system is fully automated.
New Shepard began flight testing in 2015, with 16 successful tests completed by 2021. In July 2021, Jeff Bezos, his brother Mark, and an auction winner who paid $28 million, were on the first crewed flight. Later that year, William Shatner and Michael Strahan also traveled on separate New Shepard missions.
The upcoming flight, designated NS-31, will be New Shepard’s 31st launch and its 11th with people on board.

Blue Origin plans to launch its New Shepard spacecraft on a mission called NS-31 on April 14th. Liftoff is scheduled to occur from Launch Site One in the West Texas desert, near the Guadalupe Mountains, with the launch window opening at 8:30 a.m. Central Time.

As a huge Blue Origin fan, I’m always amazed by the New Shepard launches! It’s incredible to think that the astronauts are rocketing towards space faster than three times the speed of sound. They actually cross the Kármán line – that’s the official boundary of space, 62 miles up – and then get to experience weightlessness, floating around and looking back at Earth. The whole journey, from launch to landing with parachutes, only takes about 11 minutes, which is just mind-blowing!

The crew for the NS-31 mission is a groundbreaking group including singer Katy Perry, CBS Mornings host Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn, STEMBoard founder and former NASA scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics researcher and activist Amanda Nguyen, and TV personality Lauren Sánchez. This mission marks the first all-female spaceflight crew since 1963, when Valentina Tereshkova of the Soviet Union became the first woman in space. Notably, Amanda Nguyen will be the first Vietnamese woman to travel to space, and Aisha Bowe will be the first person of Bahamian heritage to do so.

Each woman on this mission has a personal motivation for participating. In a recent interview with ELLE magazine, many of them shared their desire to be role models for future generations. Katy Perry wants to show her daughter, Daisy, that she can achieve anything, regardless of her background. She hopes to instill in Daisy the belief that limits are self-imposed.
Meanwhile, Joan King, who admitted to feeling anxious, hopes her participation will inspire others to push past their fears and try new things. She believes her experience will open doors for those who previously felt hesitant.
And for Mai Nguyen, this mission represents a long-held dream finally coming true. She previously worked at NASA and studied astrophysics, but life circumstances, including experiencing sexual assault, led her to focus on advocacy. After successfully drafting and passing legislation protecting survivors’ rights, she felt ready to reconnect with her original passion and honor the person she once was.

As reported by Good Morning America, the entire crew will arrive at the launch site several days before liftoff to prepare. This training includes getting their flight suits fitted, learning the ins and outs of the spacecraft, practicing communication with mission control, and reviewing all safety procedures.
Despite the official training program, some crew members took extra steps to prepare for the mission. Bowe explained to ELLE weeks before launch that she’d been preparing for a year, recently increasing the intensity. She completed a NASTAR simulation, which gave her a realistic idea of what to expect during the flight, and emphasized the importance of physical conditioning. She also had a fighter jet flight scheduled, eager to experience the forces involved. Flynn also prepared by participating in multiple zero-gravity simulation flights. These involved flying a modified Boeing 747 in a way that created brief periods of weightlessness, allowing her to practice moving without gravity. She also completed the NASTAR training, where she experienced forces up to five times the normal pull of gravity, hoping to enjoy the weightlessness in space.

Each astronaut is bringing a few personal items on their mission. King is bringing photos, while Sánchez is taking a stuffed animal character from her children’s book, The Fly Who Flew to Space. Bowe is carrying a historic flag – the Apollo 12 flag – given to her by Nancy Conrad, the wife of astronaut Pete Conrad, who saw parallels between their journeys. Bowe is also bringing plant samples from Winston-Salem State University and dehydrated conch chowder representing The Bahamas. Nguyen is taking shells from her mother’s homeland, as well as a personal reminder to “Never ever give up,” which she wrote after a difficult experience and kept with her throughout her education and advocacy. She’s also bringing a pen used by former President Barack Obama to sign the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Act, a coin from the Nguyen dynasty, and seeds from a Freetown cotton tree.

Several celebrities have shared their thoughts on the recent space mission. Stars like Tom Hanks, Megan Rapinoe, Bill Nye, and Drew Barrymore sent encouraging video messages to the crew. Drew Barrymore even said she looked forward to learning from the astronauts upon their return.
However, not everyone is supportive. Olivia Munn voiced her criticism on the Today with Jenna & Friends show, questioning the purpose of the mission given pressing issues facing the world and the enormous cost involved, noting that many people are struggling to afford basic necessities. She also described the endeavor as excessive.
King acknowledges the concerns surrounding billionaire Jeff Bezos and the perception that the mission serves as publicity for him and his company, Blue Origin. She admits to questioning some of Bezos’s decisions but believes this mission has broader significance. King feels it’s possible to acknowledge both the mission’s potential benefits and the valid criticisms surrounding it, suggesting it doesn’t have to be an either/or situation.
