Sleepy Hollow: Tim Burton and Johnny Depp’s $206M Horror Hit Resurrected on Streaming

I can’t believe how popular Tim Burton and Johnny Depp’s Sleepy Hollow is becoming again! It’s based on that classic story, and Depp plays Ichabod Crane – he’s a police officer from New York City who goes to Sleepy Hollow to figure out who – or what – is behind these really creepy deaths. Apparently, it’s all linked to the legend of the Headless Horseman!

With Halloween just around the corner, viewers on Paramount+ are embracing the spooky season! As of October 27th, Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow is currently the ninth most popular movie on the service in the U.S., beating out Scream VI (2023) which is in tenth place.

I’ve been checking out what’s popular on Paramount+, and it’s a pretty diverse list! While Sleepy Hollow didn’t quite make the top spots this week, I noticed a lot of people are watching things like Men in Black II (from 2002), Grown Ups (2010), and the newer Top Gun: Maverick (2022). The classics like the original Men in Black (1997) are still going strong, too, along with recent releases like Fight or Flight (2024) and Step Brothers (2008). But right now, everyone seems to be hooked on The Naked Gun (2025)—it’s currently number one!

I’ve been hearing a lot about this movie lately – it’s really taken off on streaming, which is awesome! It actually had a pretty good run in theaters too. It’s interesting because it came after Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks! back in ’96, and people really responded to it. Critics seemed to love the creepy vibe and the effects were seriously impressive. Plus, the cast was stacked – Christina Ricci, Christopher Walken, Miranda Richardson, Christopher Lee, and even Michael Gambon all had roles. It’s a fantastic ensemble!

Critics generally liked Sleepy Hollow, as shown by its 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers loved it even more, giving it an 80% rating on the site’s Popcornmeter. The film also received critical acclaim from the Academy, earning three nominations at the 2000 Oscars and winning an award for Best Art Direction.

The movie Sleepy Hollow was a commercial success. With a budget of around $70 million, it earned over $206 million worldwide, making it a profitable film. This was a significant improvement compared to director Tim Burton’s previous film, Mars Attacks!, which had earned $101 million a few years before.

The film is gaining popularity again on streaming services, coinciding with plans for a new version of Sleepy Hollow. In 2022, filmmaker Lindsey Anderson Beer, known for her work on Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, was announced as the director of a fresh adaptation of the classic Irving tale, though the project’s current progress is unknown.

While Tim Burton’s 1999 film was well-received, it isn’t typically ranked among his most successful projects with Johnny Depp. The pair have collaborated on eight films in total, and are best known for classics like Edward Scissorhands (1990), Ed Wood (1994), and Sweeney Todd (2007).

The continued popularity of Sleepy Hollow on streaming services as Halloween approaches proves how well the movie creates a spooky and atmospheric experience. It’s clear that Paramount+ viewers think it’s a perfect fit for the season.
