Zach Cregger’s 2025 horror film, Weapons, was a big success in theaters, earning over $200 million thanks to positive reviews and recommendations. While some people waited to watch it at home, Weapons is now gaining popularity on HBO Max, allowing a new audience to discover and enjoy Cregger’s story and characters.
Many modern horror films tie up every loose end, but Weapons intentionally leaves some questions unanswered. The biggest mystery revolves around Aunt Gladys, the film’s villain who terrorizes the town of Maybrook. While the director plans to delve deeper into Gladys’s story in a future spinoff, another significant unanswered question won’t receive the same attention—and that’s perfectly fine, as the answer is already present within the film.
Weapons Points Something Out But Never Explains It

From the very beginning of Weapons, a feeling of intense tension hangs over the town. After nearly all the students in a third-grade class vanish overnight, everyone is desperate for answers and quickly suspects Justine Gandy, their teacher. Much of the movie follows Justine as she tries to learn more about Alex, the only student left, but she struggles to find any clues. Things start to make sense when a worried parent, Archer Graff, trusts Justine and joins her investigation. They discover that Alex’s aunt, Gladys, is a witch who hypnotized the children to steal their energy, and she’s now manipulating others in town to cover her tracks.
Alex’s part of the movie shows how his aunt arrived and quickly began causing trouble. When she decided Alex’s parents weren’t enough, she made him steal things from his classmates to help her with a ritual. She finished everything by 2:17 AM, which is why that time was so important to the initial investigation. Although the movie doesn’t revisit the significance of 2:17 later on, there are clues that suggest it plays a bigger role in the story than it first appears.
The Time of the Crime in Weapons Could Mean a Couple of Things

The reason director Cregger chose 2:17 AM as the time the children disappear seems to connect to the story’s numbers: two kids are gone, leaving behind Justine and Alex. Some believe the ‘2’ also hints at Gladys’s actions, as Alex’s parents are her first victims. It’s possible Gladys’s powers only work at a specific time, but Cregger initially claimed the number was simply meant to be noticeable. However, he later revealed another aspect of his thinking, suggesting there’s more to it than that.
In an interview with CinemaBlend, director Cregger discussed his admiration for Stephen King, particularly The Shining. He initially thought about having the children start running at 2:37, a nod to the infamous Room 237 in Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation. Ultimately, he chose 2:17 instead, unaware that this time also held significance within the original Shining story. King’s version of the hotel features room 217, not 237. It’s likely Cregger subconsciously swapped the numbers. Regardless of his reasoning, it proved effective – people are still discussing his film months after its release.
Weapons is streaming on HBO Max.
