Wednesday Season 2 Defeats Monster: Jeffrey Dahmer as Third Most-Popular Netflix TV Show

As a Netflix subscriber, I remember fall 2022 being huge for the platform! They released two shows – and Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story – that quickly became incredibly popular, both landing on their list of most-watched TV shows.

Wednesday is currently the most-watched English-language TV show. The first season, released in November 2022, quickly gained 252.1 million views and held the top spot. When Season 2 premiered this year, it continued the show’s success, immediately entering the Top 10. According to Tudum, Season 2 also pushed the popular series The Jeffrey Dahmer Story down from its fifth-place position.

As a huge fan, I’m so excited to see Wednesday Season 2 continuing to climb the charts! It’s been almost three months since the first part dropped on August 6th, and two months since the season finale on September 3rd, but it’s still going strong. Right now, Wednesday has racked up 115.7 million views, putting it in fourth place on the list of most popular English TV shows – just ahead of Dahmer with 115.6 million views. It’s amazing to see so many people loving the show!

I’ve been following the streaming charts closely, and it’s been a bit sad to see The Jeffrey Dahmer Story keep slipping. It started the year in a strong third place, but Adolescence gained a lot of traction and pushed it down to second, then fourth. Now, with the latest update after Season 2 of Wednesday, Dahmer has fallen to fifth place. It’s the second time this year it’s been bumped from its higher ranking, and honestly, I was rooting for it to stay near the top!

Season 2 of Wednesday has one week left to climb the ranks on Netflix’s Top 10 list. Netflix measures a show’s popularity by how many views it gets in its first 91 days, and that window closes on November 5th for Wednesday Season 2. With Stranger Things Season 4 currently at 140.7 million views, it’s unlikely either season will reach the very top of the charts.

Wednesday Will Return With Season 3

Despite adding new seasons – Season 2 focused on Erik and Lyle Menendez, and Season 3 covered the story of Ed Gein – the Monster series hasn’t gained much attention and has received criticism. Previous seasons, including the one about Lizzie Borden, also struggled to make an impact. Meanwhile, Wednesday remains very popular.

While critics generally liked Season 2 more than Season 1 (87% vs. 73%), viewers actually preferred the first season. Season 1 had an 86% audience approval rating, compared to 76% for Season 2. Across both seasons, the series as a whole has earned an 80% positive rating from critics and an 81% approval rating from audiences.

Netflix has renewed the show before Season 2 even comes out, and they plan to build on the story with more content in the future.

Both Wednesday and Monster are streaming on Netflix.
