The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for 2026, is facing intense attention. This is because the film represents a significant change in direction for Marvel Studios. Originally, Avengers 5 was meant to center around Jonathan Majors’ character, Kang the Conqueror, and his army of alternate versions. However, due to off-screen issues, Marvel decided to move away from Kang and instead feature Doctor Doom (played by Robert Downey Jr.) as the primary villain and a threat to the entire multiverse.
Until now, Marvel fans haven’t known what the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe could have looked like if Kang had stayed as the main villain of the Multiverse Saga. But now, we’re starting to learn some details about a potential storyline for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty – one that would have involved a surprising team of Avengers battling Kang. Or, more accurately, a version of Kang.
Michael Waldron, known for his work on shows like Rick and Morty, Loki, and the film Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, is currently promoting his new Hulu series, Chad Powers. He was originally chosen to write the script for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and remained involved even after the project was reimagined as Avengers: Doomsday. Recently, Waldron participated in a Reddit “ask me anything” session, so fans naturally had questions for him about his Marvel projects.
Avengers: Doomsday Writer Reveals Young Avengers Storyline From Kang Dynasty Script

A fan asked if any ideas originally developed for the Kang Dynasty script ended up being used in Doomsday, or if they at least helped the writers overcome challenges with the new script. While Matthew Waldron didn’t give a straight answer, he did reveal a concept he and writer Jeff Loveness considered for The Kang Dynasty. The idea involved the Young Avengers believing they’d achieved a major victory against Kang, only to discover the reality was much different than they expected.
Jeff Loveness and I came up with a story idea for the Young Avengers where they fought a version of Kang, and we were really excited about it. But then we found out this Kang was new to the job – he literally had a card saying it was his first day! We were disappointed, as we thought he might end up being the lizard-like Kang from the end of Kang Dynasty. Regardless, it was a fun brainstorming session.
Honestly, when the writers talk about Kang, I’m pretty sure they’re referencing that variant we saw at the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – the one people are calling ‘Lizard Kang’. But, you know, it’s hard to say for sure, and it’s just my best guess!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been subtly setting up the Young Avengers team throughout the Multiverse Saga. Things officially started moving forward at the end of The Marvels when Kamala Khan approached Kate Bishop about joining forces. There’s been speculation – and even some supposed concept art – suggesting the Young Avengers, along with an X-Men character, could appear in Avengers: Doomsday. So, it’s not entirely surprising to learn that the writers of Kang Dynasty were considering the Young Avengers as a key element of the film’s plot.
It’s likely the major plot points of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday will be very similar to what was originally planned for The Kang Dynasty. The main change will simply be the villain and their origin story. Hopefully, the Young Avengers’ initial enthusiasm and eventual setbacks will still be included in the movie.
Avengers: Doomsday will be in theaters on December 18, 2026.
