I rarely interview the same person twice in one year, but Neil Newbon is exceptionally in demand.
TopMob Gaming recently interviewed Neil Newbon, the voice actor well-known for playing Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3, to discuss his latest role in Starfinder: Afterlight, and other topics.
You can watch the full interview on our YouTube channel, or use the video player right here if you prefer.
Newbon is very popular, so we actually did this interview in a London alleyway near a busy train station while he was traveling between meetings.

Newbon has been sharing about the new game, Starfinder: Afterlight – what are his thoughts on it?
According to Newbon, Starfinder: Afterlight is a role-playing game with an isometric perspective, built using the popular Starfinder 2nd Edition rules from Paizo.
If you’re unfamiliar with Starfinder, it’s essentially a newer game that evolved from Pathfinder. Pathfinder, in turn, started as a branch of the popular game Dungeons & Dragons, but Starfinder is a distinct game with its own rules and setting.
Starfinder is a really imaginative blend of fantasy and science fiction, with a surprising Western feel. It’s a great game for roleplaying, where you can become heroes battling mysterious threats – possibly even saving the universe! Or, you know, just enjoying some snacks. Either way works.
Newbon described the game as a “really brilliant experience.” He’s had a chance to test it out and is confident it’s on track to be great, hoping players will thoroughly enjoy it.

Epictellers, a small game development company based in Spain, is creating the game. In a Zoom interview, the company’s two founders jokingly compared themselves to Larian, the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3, saying Larian is like a Ferrari while Epictellers is more like a bicycle.
When I put this to Newbon, he said with a laugh, “A bicycle, but a really nice bicycle.”
He explained that the game is an independent project with big goals. Fortunately, they were already fully funded thanks to a recent Kickstarter campaign. They didn’t need the funding, but wanted the extra resources to make the game the best it could be, and he feels good about that.
Newbon said the reaction to the Kickstarter campaign was incredible. They quickly surpassed their funding goal, reaching around 600 percent of it within just 48 hours, which was a wonderful surprise.
I’m seeing a lot of love for Starfinder – people are really into the Paizo system, which is awesome. But honestly, a big part of it is the sci-fi fantasy genre itself. Everyone’s just hyped to see where this is going, and I totally get why!
Newbon is the voice director for the game and also plays a character named Preach, an alien mystic. He connected with Epictellers through a shared acquaintance.
Joining the cast alongside Newbon is Inel Tomlinson, who also appears with Newbon on the Dungeons & Dragons & Drama podcast.
You can listen to the full interview to find out how the podcast is doing, hear stories about Newbon’s recent TED Talk, and learn more about Starfinder: Afterlight.
The Kickstarter campaign for Starfinder: Afterlight is now running—you can find it at this link. It ends on Thursday, November 6th.
