From the beginning, the Hulk has always leaned towards the horror genre, so it’s not surprising that Marvel has published several genuinely frightening stories about him. The Hulk originated as a classic horror monster – a scientist transformed by an accident into a powerful, uncontrollable being, very much in the style of stories like The Wolf Man or Jekyll & Hyde. It’s interesting, then, that most Hulk comics focus on standard superhero adventures, while true horror stories featuring him are less common. However, Marvel has released some truly scary Hulk tales that have frightened readers over the years.
As a huge horror fan, I’ve been digging into the most terrifying Hulk stories out there. It’s amazing how they’ve taken the character from superhero action to genuinely frightening tales – everything from demonic threats and total devastation to seriously disturbing body horror. Here’s what I’ve found for fellow horror lovers!
5) Maestro

Though not a typical horror story, Maestro presents a frightening scenario: what if the Hulk kept his incredible intelligence and used his strength to conquer the world? The story starts after a nuclear war devastates the planet. Knowing he can’t prevent further conflict, the Hulk enters a long hibernation. When he awakens and finds the scattered remains of civilization, repeated attacks push him to take control.
The story gets incredibly dark, with this version of the Hulk committing brutal acts. He kills numerous opponents and even attempts to have Hercules murdered when the powerful hero returns to fight him. He nearly killed his alternate self, who traveled through time, too. This Hulk was a terrifying villain, truly monstrous in his actions, and readers are left feeling grateful that the Hulk we know from Earth-616 has always been a force for good.
4) Old Man Logan

Although Hulk wasn’t a central character in Old Man Logan, his appearance was truly frightening. The story focuses on Logan, who retired after being manipulated into killing his fellow X-Men by Mysterio’s illusions. Logan eventually started a family, but the Hulk’s arrival disrupted everything. Imagine the horrifying family from The Hills Have Eyes, but they’re all mutants – that gives you an idea of the kind of threat the Hulk posed.
As a huge Marvel fan, I always found the story of Old Man Logan incredibly disturbing. It’s a dark tale where the Hulk actually ends up marrying his cousin, She-Hulk, and they have kids who are all mutated. They become a powerful, controlling family, basically taking over the West Coast and forcing everyone to submit to them. Then, while Wolverine was away, they did something truly awful – they attacked his home and murdered his entire family. That’s what set Old Man Logan on this brutal quest for revenge. He eventually tracked down the massive, mutated Hulk… and the details of what happened when they finally met are some of the most shocking and horrifying I’ve ever read in a comic book. It’s a really grim story, and it stuck with me for a long time.
3) The Infernal Hulk

If you’re a horror fan, the current run of Hulk is definitely worth checking out. The storyline, called The Infernal Hulk, is a straight-up horror experience. This new series focuses on putting Hulk in terrifying stories and adventures where he faces off against demons, monsters, dark magic users, powerful cosmic beings, and ancient gods. He even revisits the place where the One Below first appeared and where the source of his Gamma powers originated. Created by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Adam Gorham, this Hulk series has everything a horror reader could ask for and more.
2) Immortal Hulk

As a huge Hulk fan, I was blown away when they decided to take the character in a completely new direction with The Immortal Hulk. It wasn’t just a superhero story anymore – it was straight-up horror! They really dug into the roots of what made the Hulk scary, and it led to the introduction of the Devil Hulk, which was seriously terrifying. This version was brutal and completely unhinged, and honestly, it was the most frightening thing Bruce Banner had ever faced. Plus, the series had some of the most incredible and disturbing body horror I’ve ever seen in a Marvel comic.
In The Immortal Hulk, a mysterious ‘Green Door’ was introduced – a gateway between Earth and a terrifying realm called the Below-Place. This is where Hulks go when they die, and it explains why they can keep coming back. The story also revealed the existence of the One Below All, a powerful and frightening entity, and showed how even someone as intelligent as the Leader couldn’t truly control it. Throughout the series, Hulk died repeatedly, and each return made him increasingly monstrous, creating a truly horrifying and unsettling story focused on body horror.
1) The Incredible Hulk: The End

One of the most frightening stories featuring the Hulk depicts a future where he’s the last living creature on Earth. Titled Hulk: The End, and created by Peter David and Dale Keown, the story shows a desolate planet where the Hulk struggles to survive, primarily contending with dangerous insects that feed on carrion – and him.
This comic features some truly disturbing horror scenes, like when insects devour the Hulk down to his skeleton, but his healing factor slowly brings him back. It also explores the psychological torment of Bruce Banner, who sometimes awakens to find he’s lost everything and is still unable to find peace. The artwork is fantastic, and the story concludes with a final, heartbreakingly horrific gift from the Hulk to Banner.
