Are You Afraid of the Dark is a classic Nickelodeon show known for its spooky campfire stories told by the Midnight Society. The series was so popular it was recently rebooted with a new group of characters. While it remains a beloved “Snick” show, it wasn’t the only Nickelodeon program to feature scary creatures. Another Nickelodeon cartoon deserves a revival and a second look for its creepy and unsettling content.
Premiering on Nickelodeon on October 29, 1994, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters presented a unique school where young monsters learned the art of scaring people. Before shows like Harry Potter and Monsters, Inc., there was Ickis, Krumm, and Oblina – a trio of supernatural students. They constantly competed with each other to create the most imaginative scares, hoping to impress their headmaster, The Gromble. Failing their assignments meant facing not only The Gromble’s harsh punishments, but also the terrifying consequences delivered by the silent giant, The Snorch.
After four seasons and more than fifty episodes, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters ended three years after it first aired. Sadly, this finale also marked the end of the entire series, though the characters have popped up in video games and ads over the years. Nickelodeon has successfully revived other classic Nicktoons like Rugrats, Fairly Odd Parents, and Doug, so it makes us wonder how a modern version of Real Monsters might look, especially as we enjoy the spooky season.
The Real Monsters’ Return

It’s been a long time since Aaahh!!! Real Monsters was on TV, and a lot has changed since then. That opens up a lot of possibilities if the show were to return. Many revivals of animated shows like Tiny Toons simply age up the characters and send them to college. It could be fun to see Krumm, Oblina, and Ickis navigating college life, trying to scare people while dealing with more mature issues. Unlike Monsters Inc, which focused on adult monsters, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters was always about monsters in school, giving creators a lot of fresh stories to tell.
The series finale wasn’t a cliffhanger, unlike many other Nickelodeon cartoons which often didn’t feel like a proper ending. The final scene showed how the three monster characters first met and became friends at school. This leaves the door open for a potential reboot or continuation without being too restricted by the original series’ events.
There haven’t been any announcements about a continuation or reboot of Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, but it would actually be a great fit for Paramount’s current shows. If you missed it originally, all four seasons are now available to stream on Paramount+. Because the episodes are mostly self-contained, you can start watching at any point – just pick one that looks interesting!
Would you be excited about a possible revival of Aaahh!! Real Monsters? And what other classic Nickelodeon shows would you love to see make a comeback? Share your thoughts in the comments and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
