Okay, so I just heard some awesome news! Two classic Sega games from the 90s are coming back next year. One of them is going to be a PlayStation exclusive, which is kinda cool but means I’ll only be able to play it on my PS4 or PS5. The other one is getting a wider release – thankfully! I’ll be able to grab it on PlayStation, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. Bummer though, it looks like neither game is planned for PC or the new Switch 2, which is a little disappointing.
Two games stand out here. The first, Prize Fighters, was created by Digital Pictures and Sega and came out in 1993, only for the Sega CD. The second, Slam City With Scottie Pippen, also from Digital Pictures, was released in 1994 and was available on Sega CD, Sega 32X, and MS-DOS.
Slam City with Scottie Pippen: Respect Edition
Slam City with Scottie Pippen is a landmark game because it was the first basketball game to use full-motion video (FMV). Players compete head-to-head against different opponents, including Scottie Pippen himself. While the game is straightforward and simple, it’s also quite unique. When it was first released, opinions were mixed, and that’s likely why no other games tried this approach.
Currently, there are no announced updates or enhancements to the original game from the 1990s. However, details might be revealed in the future, potentially when a release date is confirmed. As of now, the only information available is that it’s expected to launch sometime next year.
Prize Fighter: Heavyweight Edition
Prize Fighter is a boxing video game that uses full-motion video, similar to Slam City with Scottie Pippen. However, unlike Slam City, it’s presented entirely in black and white. You play as ‘the kid’ and must win against several boxers to ultimately challenge the champion.
Similar to Slam City with Scottie Pippen, we don’t know when this will be released in 2026, and there are no details about what’s new or improved. It also received a somewhat mixed reaction when it first came out.
It’s really exciting to see these two classic games make a comeback! With so many 90s Sega titles being re-released for fans, it’s becoming a bit of a trend. In fact, just last week, a Sega game from 1999 received a fresh remake.
