For decades, Nintendo has created some of the most popular video games ever made, and now they’re also making movies! The recent Super Mario Bros. Movie was a hit, faithfully bringing the characters to life on the big screen and becoming one of the best video game adaptations in years. A sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is already planned, and there’s talk that Nintendo is building a larger interconnected universe – potentially leading to a big team-up event similar to The Avengers.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge success in cinemas and is now available on Amazon Prime. With a sequel already planned and talk of a Donkey Kong movie, a source claims Nintendo is building a full cinematic universe. Apparently, after films focusing on Luigi’s Mansion, Donkey Kong, and Princess Peach, all these characters will team up in a big event inspired by Super Smash Bros. It’s unconfirmed, but this news makes me really excited!
The Super Smash Bros. series started in 1999 and is a fighting game featuring characters from many popular Nintendo games. Given that Nintendo might be aiming for a large-scale crossover event similar to The Avengers, Smash Bros. seems like a natural way to bring that about.

For now, it’s best to be skeptical of this report and wait for official announcements from Nintendo and Illumination. Currently, the only confirmed upcoming movie is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which will likely introduce the character Rosalina. Even if other projects are in the planning stages, it will probably be a long time before they’re released in theaters.
If a shared movie universe like the Marvel Cinematic Universe is created with a Super Smash Bros. film, I’m immediately curious: will we see characters from across all of Nintendo’s games? The Super Smash Bros. games are all about bringing together heroes like Mario, Pikachu, and Samus Aran from Metroid for epic battles. This would be incredibly exciting for dedicated gamers, but it raises the question of whether it might not appeal as much to those who only casually enjoy the games. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, for example, was specifically designed to be family-friendly.
It also makes me think about the potential legal issues with making a Smash movie that stays true to the games. Even though all the characters are from Nintendo games, many different developers created those games. Would each of those developers need to give their permission for a crossover movie to happen? Just thinking about it is complicated!
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 3rd, 2026. Fans are eager to find out if this movie will be part of a larger, shared universe, and hopefully more details will be revealed soon.
