HBO Max is seeing great success with the new series, which has become its third-most popular premiere. The show, created by Jason Fuchs, Andy Muschietti, and Barbara Muschietti, is based on a story by Stephen King and takes place before the events of the 2017 and 2019 It movies.
Both It movies were very successful in theaters, and people are clearly still excited about the story. The new series, Welcome to Derry, recently attracted 5.7 million viewers in its first three days, according to Deadline. This makes it the third-most-watched premiere ever for HBO and HBO Max combined.
As a huge fan of quality TV, I’ve been following the numbers on HBO’s new King adaptation, and it’s doing incredibly well! Only House of the Dragon and The Last of Us – both shows I absolutely loved when they came out in 2022 and 2023 – had bigger premieres. And speaking of exciting news, HBO just announced that the second episode of Welcome to Derry will be available early on their streaming service for Halloween – you’ll be able to watch it at 3am Eastern on October 31st! Definitely setting my alarm for that one.
Set in 1962, Welcome to Derry tells the story of Pennywise the Clown returning to terrorize the town of Derry, Maine, coinciding with a family’s move there. Bill Skarsgård is back as the terrifying clown, and the cast also includes Jovan Adepo, James Remar, Clara Stack, Matilda Lawler, Jack Molloy Legault, and Amanda Christine.
