7 Great X-Men Heroes Nobody Talks About

Over the years, so many mutants have been part of the X-Men that some truly great heroes get lost in the shuffle and aren’t recognized. These aren’t one-time team-ups; these are mutants who were dedicated members of the X-Men for significant periods, sometimes returning multiple times. Despite their contributions—even appearing in X-Men films and shows—they’re often overlooked when people discuss the team’s most important or powerful members.

Here are seven great X-Men heroes that nobody talks about, but who deserve much more recognition.

7) Monet St. Croix

Monet St. Croix is an incredibly powerful member of the X-Men, but she’s often overlooked, possibly due to her nickname, “M,” and her complicated full name. Despite this, her abilities are impressive – she could easily defeat many of the team’s better-known heroes in a direct fight.

Monet St. Croix is a unique and sometimes difficult member of the X-Men. She occasionally transforms into the dangerous Penance due to her brother, Emplate. Despite this, she’s been a dedicated hero with teams like Generation X, X-Corps, X-Corporation, X-Factor, and the X-Men. Her mutant powers give her incredible physical abilities, exceeding those of ordinary humans, and she can also regenerate, read minds, fly, and move objects with her mind.

6) Jamie Madrox

Jamie Madrox, also known as Multiple Man, appeared in X-Men: The Last Stand and has been featured in various X-Men animated series. Despite his impressive ability to create numerous clones of himself – and gain all their knowledge and experiences – he often doesn’t receive the recognition he deserves. While this power is amazing, Jamie also experiences the pain felt by each of his clones when they die.

A highlight of Jamie’s time with the X-Men was creating X-Factor Investigations, which reimagined the original team as a private detective agency. This unique approach allowed Marvel to explore darker, more mystery-driven stories with Jamie taking the lead. Despite this and his appearances in other media, Jamie, as the Multiple Man, doesn’t get the recognition he deserves and should be a more prominent character in Marvel Comics.

5) Longshot

Longshot has the potential to be a major hero, but he’s often seen as a comedic character tied to the often-disliked world of Mojo. This dimension, known as the Mojoverse, is essentially a reality TV universe run by Mojo, who kidnaps mutants and forces them to compete in televised games, including gladiator contests where Longshot is a participant.

Longshot debuted about five years before Gambit, and the two characters share a lot of similarities in both their powers and personalities. Interestingly, Rogue once had a crush on Longshot. While Gambit became hugely popular due to his charming personality and background, Longshot hasn’t received the same level of recognition. This is a shame, as he’s a fantastic hero who consistently enhances the comics he’s in. He even had a significant relationship – he was married to Dazzler – but many fans likely don’t even remember that.

4) Polaris

Magneto is known as one of Marvel’s strongest mutants, and he’s now officially classified as an Omega-level mutant. Despite sharing similar powers, his daughter, Polaris, often gets overlooked when people discuss the most powerful X-Men. Surprisingly, when Magneto’s daughter is brought up, many mistakenly think of Scarlet Witch, even though Scarlet Witch isn’t actually his biological daughter – Polaris is.

Polaris first appeared in the X-Men comic book back in 1968, making her a veteran character who actually predates popular mutants like Storm, Wolverine, and Nightcrawler. Despite her long history, many casual fans don’t immediately recognize her name, often focusing on those other, more well-known characters. As Magneto’s daughter, Polaris deserves greater recognition.

3) Havoc

Havoc, Polaris’s partner, is just as deserving of praise, but often overlooked. Cyclops receives a lot of attention for his achievements, yet few people talk about his brother, Alex Summers. They grew up together in an orphanage, and while Alex was eventually adopted, he later joined the X-Men alongside Scott.

Havoc has the ability to absorb cosmic energy from around him and turn it into powerful plasma blasts. Unlike Cyclops, who struggles to control his optic blasts, Havoc has full command over his powers. Despite a difficult life, including a deeply troubled relationship with Madelyne Pryor – considered one of the most damaging in Marvel history – Havoc remains an underappreciated X-Men character.

2) Sunspot

Many comic book fans underestimate Sunspot. He began as a member of the New Mutants, where he was very close friends with Cannonball. Together, they were central figures and often led the team. But as Sunspot matured, his life took a different path due to his father’s involvement with the Hellfire Club. Sunspot inherited a great deal of wealth and used his resources to create his own path, separate from the X-Men.

It’s easy to see why Sunspot isn’t often discussed with the X-Men – he achieved a lot independently. He often worked quietly, even funding and assembling his own team of heroes similar to the Avengers. While Sunspot is incredibly powerful, his strategic actions and influence are what truly make him compelling, and he deserves more recognition for them.

1) Northstar

Quicksilver is usually the first speedster Marvel fans mention, but Northstar is just as fast and doesn’t get nearly enough recognition. As one of the original members of Alpha Flight – alongside his twin sister, Aurora – Northstar was known for being a bit cocky. But over time, he’s shown he’s a truly great hero in many ways.

Northstar is a long-time member of the X-Men and even led the team X-Factor when it was based on Krakoa. He’s also known for a landmark moment in Marvel Comics history: his marriage to Kyle Jinadu, which was the first same-sex wedding ever featured in a Marvel comic. Beyond that, he’s one of the fastest heroes in the entire comic book world, and deserves to be more widely recognized.
