Steve Orlando Teases The End 2099 is Just The Beginning (And Marvel is Getting It’s Coolest Spider-Man Yet) (Exclusive)

Marvel’s futuristic 2099 universe is coming to a dramatic conclusion this December! Writer Steve Orlando and artist Ibraim Roberson are teaming up for a five-issue series called The End 2099, which will unite heroes from across the entire 2099 timeline and the wider Marvel multiverse. They’ll face Abyssus, a terrifying villain formed from the combination of Knull’s influence and Galactus, in a battle to save the universe. The stakes are incredibly high, and a surprising character – Spider-Man from the year 3099 – will also join the fight!

The upcoming event, The End 2099, promises to be huge and thrilling for fans. In an interview with ComicBook, writer Orlando discussed the series, hinting that it will present major challenges for the heroes battling Abyssus and introduce some fantastic new characters. Spider-Man 3099 is shaping up to be a standout, and could be the beginning of a larger story arc.

The End 2099 Will See The Return of Some Epic Marvel Characters (Including Mayday Parker)

The End 2099 has a lot of exciting elements, but the announced challengers – like Wanda Maximoff from House of M – are particularly interesting. Can you tell us how you chose which characters from Marvel’s vast universe to include?

When creating conflicts, focus on what challenges your main characters face. The best villains or rivals highlight weaknesses or opposing beliefs in your heroes – that’s the most important thing. Always prioritize story and character development. Then, choose the most compelling matchups. For example, Wanda from House of M was paired with Strange 2099 because they share similar goals but have very different approaches and limits. Both will do anything to protect those they care about, but how they do it differs. The conflict between the Abyssal Warriors and the 2099 heroes also raises a moral question: the heroes of 2099 are fighting to save their entire reality from being destroyed. But each of the Abyssal Warriors is the only hope for their universe. If they fall, their entire universe is lost. This creates a difficult choice: who is willing to sacrifice what? When faced with the potential destruction of multiple realities, who truly deserves the title of ‘hero’? Characters like Strange 2099 and Wanda would likely have different answers, and they both have the power to back up their beliefs.

Which of these characters from the rest of the Marvel multiverse was your favorite to bring in?

As many expected, Wanda’s House of M storyline has been a major success – and there’s more to come! It’s been incredibly enjoyable combining the classic Cyclops and Phoenix from the Byrne/Claremont era with their 2099 counterparts. As a longtime fan of the series, I especially love seeing Mayday Parker show up.

A New Spider-Man Brings Hope… and Cool New Powers, Too

Okay, so everyone’s buzzing about Spider-Man 3099 in The End 2099, and honestly, I get why. This version of Spidey looks amazing. While I can’t give away any major spoilers, let me just say this character isn’t just a visual upgrade. He brings a whole different energy to the screen – a bit more seasoned, a bit more…intense. Expect a Spider-Man who’s seen some things, and isn’t afraid to show it. It’s a really compelling take on the classic hero, and I think fans are going to be incredibly excited by what he brings to the story.

Okay, let me tell you about Spider-Man 3099. This isn’t your grandfather’s Spider-Man, or even Miguel O’Hara’s! Forget cyberpunk – think hard sci-fi, almost like Foundation. The future he inhabits is completely controlled by massive corporations – they dictate everything, even what people eat and believe. It’s a world where Spider-Man doesn’t know about past heroes like Peter Parker. He genuinely thinks he’s the first, which makes his eventual meeting with Miguel so impactful. Despite the futuristic setting, some things remain constant – like the idea of multiple Spider-People evolving across time. This Spider-Man is a beacon of hope, fighting for the underdog, even when that fight feels like a full-blown war. He’s the key to shifting the balance of power back towards freedom. Just like Miguel, he feels like the beginning of something bigger. And while he’s got the classic Spider-Man abilities, he’s also got some awesome new ones – his body can create custom venoms, delivered through stingers! He, like Peter and Miguel, always prioritizes the everyday person. But in the oppressive world of 3099, being a hero makes you the most wanted man around.

What’s one of the most exciting, but still secret, things about The End 2099 that you think fans will love when they find out?

Creating the dynamic between Abyssus and Mephisto has been incredibly exciting. Abyssus is a really compelling character – combining Galactus and Knull was always going to be interesting, but he’s become much more than we initially imagined. It’s allowed us to explore the complexities of Galactus by contrasting him with another ancient power. While Knull thrives on emptiness, Galactus is fundamentally a scientist, as he explains in the first issue: he once had a reason for being, but now he serves Knull. However, someone like Galactus doesn’t stay defeated or controlled for long. And that’s before considering his new herald! This series also lets us revisit a favorite pairing from Conquest 2099 – the Silver Surfer versus Dracula! But now, as Bloodwielder, Dracula has cosmic power…making him more formidable than ever. Though, does Dracula ever truly follow anyone’s orders?

If you had to describe The End 2099 in five words or less, what would you say?

Absolutely! I can express that simply and even throw in a reference to Smashing Pumpkins – it’s a cyclical idea, where the conclusion leads back to the start.
