A recent report indicates that Toei’s Super Sentai franchise, a long-running Japanese TV show series, has been cancelled after 50 years. If you’re familiar with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers or any of its subsequent teams, you’ve likely heard of Super Sentai. Starting in Japan half a century ago, this show introduced audiences to groups of brightly colored heroes battling evil. It proved so popular that much of its footage was adapted for the Power Rangers franchise, expanding its reach to a global audience.
Recent reports from Kyodo News and other Japanese sources indicate that TV Asahi will stop broadcasting the long-running Super Sentai series after the current season, No.1 Sentai Gozyuger. While TV Asahi hasn’t officially confirmed or denied these reports – stating only that they don’t discuss future programming – this could mean the end of a franchise that began in 1975 with Himitsu Sentai Goranger and has lasted for over 50 years.
What Does This Mean for the Future of Power Rangers?
After 30 years, Power Rangers concluded its run with Power Rangers Cosmic Fury on Netflix, and now its future is uncertain. Disney+ is reportedly developing a reboot series. This has left fans wondering what this means for the original Japanese show, Super Sentai, which provided the footage, costumes, and concepts for Power Rangers throughout its entire run.
I’m really excited about this new Power Rangers reboot! From what I’ve heard, it sounds like it’s going to lean much more into the original Power Rangers feel and move away from being so closely tied to the Japanese Super Sentai series. Honestly, it feels like after all these years, the two shows might finally go their separate ways. Some fans are worried this could mean the end of Super Sentai, which would be a shame, but others – and I’m one of them – are hoping this is just a chance for Super Sentai to refresh its brand and come back even stronger!
What’s Happening to Super Sentai?
Recent reports suggest TV Asahi may stop broadcasting Super Sentai, but it’s more likely they’re ending the current format of the show. With the series celebrating its 50th anniversary – currently airing its 49th installment after five decades – fans are optimistic that a rebrand could launch a fresh era for the 50th series, signaling a positive future for the franchise. This possibility is far more encouraging than the thought of the show ending completely.
I’ve been a huge Super Sentai fan for years, and it’s amazing to me that it’s been consistently awesome in Japan since 1975 – right up there with Kamen Rider! Honestly, the thought of it ever ending feels really sad, like a piece of childhood would be gone. It’s just that, as an international fan, it’s so hard to easily access new seasons compared to Kamen Rider, which makes it tough to show our support and let Toei know how much we care.
