The effort to keep the original voice actor for a character in the Yakuza Kiwami 3 remake is picking up steam. Today, SEGA released a new trailer highlighting the Japanese voice cast, seemingly in response to fan concerns.
I was really surprised to hear they recast Goh Hamazaki for the remake! It’s awesome that they went with Teruyuki Kagawa – he’s a fantastic actor. Not only is he playing Goh, but they’re also using his actual likeness and voice in Kiwami 3, which is a really cool touch!

This isn’t simply fans reacting negatively to something new. Soon after the information came out, people remembered accusations against Kagawa from 2019, where he was accused of sexually harassing two women. In 2022, his agency confirmed he had engaged in sexual misconduct with one of them.
Photos quickly spread online showing Kagawa forcibly grabbing a woman’s hair during one of the incidents.
Social media users started a ‘#REMOVEKAGAWA’ campaign to express their disapproval, and criticism has continued to mount as SEGA appears to be unresponsive to the situation.
As we’ve seen in the newest trailer for Yakuza 3 Remake, the main character takes center stage right from the beginning – he appears just 13 seconds in.
It’s no surprise the hashtag is all over the YouTube comments, and many people are criticizing SEGA and RGG Studio for choosing Kagawa in the first place.
The companies involved haven’t released any statement about this situation. During a recent SEGA livestream where English-speaking hosts demonstrated gameplay from Kiwami 3, the live chat was flooded with ‘#REMOVEKAGAWA’, but the broadcast team didn’t address it.
Fans have pointed out that the Yakuza/Like a Dragon games frequently show scenes of sexual harassment, so casting Kagawa feels contradictory to the series’ clear stance against it.
It will be worth watching to see if SEGA or RGG Studio address this situation, particularly as the game’s release date approaches and discussion around it increases.
Yakuza Kiwami 3 comes out on February 12th, so it seems unlikely the developers will make changes based on recent criticism and replace the character Kagawa. However, many people are still calling for them to do so.
