Superhero shows have become incredibly popular over the years, and there have been many great ones. Some are perfect to watch just once, while others are so good you’ll want to rewatch them.
Although Marvel and DC dominate superhero movies, television has seen a surge in competition, leading to some surprisingly excellent, yet overlooked, shows. This makes the future of superhero entertainment look very bright, even though some people are starting to feel tired of the genre.
It’s frustrating when a superhero show you’re really enjoying gets canceled too soon, isn’t it? But thankfully, there are some that truly deliver, and these 10 shows aren’t just good – I honestly think they’ve gotten even better with time. There are so many reasons why they stand out!
The Penguin
Even though it only came out last year, The Penguin is quickly becoming known as one of the best superhero shows of recent times, and it’s definitely worth watching again. What sets it apart from many other shows in the genre is its realistic approach. Instead of focusing on superpowers and epic battles, The Penguin delves into the gritty world of crime, power struggles, and street-level violence.
The show is fantastic the first time you watch it, especially with its surprising plot twists. But rewatching it, knowing how truly corrupt Oz is, makes it even better. Seeing his actions without any sympathy really solidifies Colin Farrell’s Penguin as one of the greatest villains ever created.
Justice League Unlimited
It can take a little while to get into Justice League Unlimited because there are so many heroes and villains to learn about. But rewatching the series is much easier and more enjoyable – once you know the characters, their stories become a lot more engaging.
Certain episodes of Justice League Unlimited are actually better than many of the DC movies, which makes rewatching them a real treat. It’s also a great time to watch the original Justice League series from 2001 before diving into Unlimited, enhancing the experience, especially if you watch both shows one after the other.
Watchmen
The 2008 film Watchmen didn’t get the attention it deserved, and the 2019 series suffers the same fate. Despite this, it’s incredibly compelling and makes you want to watch it again right away. With only nine episodes, the series is a quick watch, making repeat viewings almost unavoidable.
With compelling characters, a realistic world, and fantastic writing, Watchmen has earned its place as a modern classic. It’s short enough to binge-watch in a weekend, making it perfect for repeat viewings. Plus, the show’s clever writing reveals more with each watch, and seeing it immediately after Zack Snyder’s film offers a fresh take on the story.
Loki
As a huge MCU fan, I was a little worried when they announced a Loki series – he started as one of the villains, after all! But it totally worked. The show was a really clever, mind-bending time travel story, and honestly, it took me a while to fully grasp everything that was happening. But the ending? Perfect. It felt like a satisfying conclusion to this chapter of Loki’s journey.
Although the first time watching Loki was amazing, rewatching it really helps you grasp the complex story and what happens to each character. I’m still not sure I catch everything in the Marvel show, but a second viewing clarified a lot, and I definitely recommend watching it again – it’s a brilliant series!
The Spectacular Spider-Man
There have been many Spider-Man series over the years, but the 2008 animated show, The Spectacular Spider-Man, remains a standout and is well worth revisiting. Even though it ended almost 16 years ago, it’s still enjoyable today, making it a great choice for a rewatch or for new viewers.
The animated series The Spectacular Spider-Man really shines with its portrayal of Peter Parker and its fresh takes on characters like Tombstone and Gwen Stacy. It also boasts an impressive voice cast, including talents like Josh Keaton, Grey DeLisle, and Clancy Brown.
I still think about this project all the time, and so do a lot of other people! It’s just one of those things you can revisit again and again – it’s so comforting and enjoyable, I’ve already watched it twice and I’m sure I’ll watch it many more times.
X-Men: The Animated Series
With the arrival of X-Men ’97, it’s simple to overlook how fantastic the original X-Men cartoon series truly was, but it absolutely earned its place as a classic. The show from the 90s not only featured excellent takes on the most well-known X-Men, but also introduced many viewers to lesser-known characters for the very first time.
Some episodes of X-Men: The Animated Series actually hold up better than the movies, though not all of them. The recent release of X-Men ’97 is a great reason to revisit the original series, and it’s worth watching the episodes in their original broadcast order – especially since many viewers first encountered the show on Disney+ in a different sequence.
Young Justice
Beyond having episodes you can easily watch again and again, Young Justice remains a captivating show even on a second viewing. While the major plot twists and emotional moments lose some of their initial impact, the series is packed with compelling young characters and their individual stories are still a joy to follow.
The show begins with a few key characters, but the cast grows each season, which can make it tough to connect with everyone right away. Revisiting Young Justice, though, really made me appreciate heroes I hadn’t paid much attention to before, and gave me a fresh perspective on this story – it’s both gritty and surprisingly emotional.
Batman: The Animated Series
Calling Batman: The Animated Series timeless doesn’t quite capture how great it is, and that’s why rewatching it is so rewarding. While fans often revisit their favorite episodes, experiencing the whole series from start to finish – especially after some time away – is truly special.
While you might not discover anything new on repeat viewings, Batman: The Animated Series remains endlessly enjoyable. Revisiting this animated world is a great reminder of just how brilliant the show truly is.
Daredevil
Many fans consider Daredevil to be one of the greatest superhero shows of all time, and it’s easy to see why. The show boasts amazing fight scenes, stunning visuals, and truly memorable acting, making for a unique and captivating experience. What’s more, it still holds up incredibly well today.
Matt Murdock leads a difficult but ultimately hopeful life, constantly juggling his work as a lawyer with his secret identity as a crime-fighting vigilante – truly embodying what it means to be a hero. It seems impossible that a blind man, without any special powers, could fight powerful enemies like the Hand, Bullseye, and Kingpin, but the show Daredevil makes it feel both realistic and captivating.
The mixed reactions to the first season of Daredevil: Born Again make revisiting the original 2015 Daredevil series even more impactful. While the new show has some good qualities, it doesn’t quite reach the same level of excellence, and many fans believe the original will remain the best.
WandaVision
Love it or hate it, most people agree that WandaVision was one of the most original shows in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The idea of starting with a seemingly harmless, classic black and white sitcom and then revealing it was actually Wanda’s constructed reality – trapping real people inside – was a shocking twist that’s still memorable today.
Watching the show and discovering its secrets as they happen is exciting, but you’ll appreciate all the hidden details and clues even more once you know how everything connects. That’s why revisiting the show is so rewarding.
While some viewers were disappointed that a second season of WandaVision won’t happen, the show stands perfectly well on its own. It’s one of the most rewatchable superhero series out there, and I highly recommend revisiting it every few years – you’re sure to notice new details each time.
