Popular characters are a mainstay of Hollywood, and they’re frequently adapted into new films and shows. A great example of this is , which is currently being developed for several projects, including a new series on MGM+.
The latest version of Robin Hood, produced by Lionsgate Television for MGM+, features Jack Patten as the main character, Robin “Rob” Hood. The series also boasts a talented supporting cast. Before its November 2nd premiere, Robin Hood received a strong 80% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Based on the first five reviews—with only one being negative—the show is getting a very positive initial reaction. The score is likely to change as more people review it, but early signs are promising. Because the show hasn’t actually aired yet, there’s no audience score available. However, it looks like this series could become a surprising success, currently gaining a lot of attention and climbing the charts.
In a recent review, Andrew Murray of The Upcoming praised the new Robin Hood series, noting that while it doesn’t reinvent the genre, its strong setting and respectful take on the original story make it worth watching.
Maggie Lovitt highlights the show’s intelligent use of its historical setting, pointing out that the Robin Hood legend allows creator John Glenn to delve into the lives of Saxons living under Norman rule and the resulting political and religious tensions. She believes the show is particularly relevant now, as people are looking for figures who champion the disadvantaged. The review also commends the entire cast, singling out Lydia Peckham’s portrayal of the new character, Priscilla, as exceptionally strong.
The sole negative review comes from Kaiya Shunyata at RogerEbert.com, who believes the show, often compared to Game of Thrones without the fantasy elements, falls short because its romantic and platonic relationships don’t feel believable due to a lack of chemistry. Shunyata argues the series doesn’t fully engage viewers, suffering from weak romances and somewhat superficial political storylines.
The review highlights that the series is particularly impressive when viewed at night, thanks to the skill of cinematographer Ivan Kostić, who knows how to create beautifully expansive and well-composed scenes.
CBR’s Take on MGM+’s Robin Hood
Martin Carr’s review joined the positive feedback, particularly praising Sean Bean. Carr wrote that Bean ‘stamps his authority’ on the new limited series from MGM+, thankfully bringing his talent to the role.
While Bean gets a lot of attention, Carr points out the show truly shines because of its strong cast and carefully crafted details. Everything, from the lavish sets to the costumes, is meant to make the story feel real and engaging, ensuring this modern version of Robin Hood always feels authentic.
MGM+’s version of Robin Hood stands out because it actively tries to be different. The show builds a strong foundation by reimagining the legend with elements like folklore, woodland spirits, and religious symbols, particularly in the beginning. This approach gives the series a unique and compelling feel.
