Great stories need compelling villains, and DC Comics is no exception. The DC Universe boasts iconic bad guys like Darkseid, Lex Luthor, and the Joker. While these major villains are well-known and frequently appear in movies and shows, there are many other DC villains who deserve more recognition. Who are those underrated characters who haven’t had their chance to truly shine like the Joker or Lex Luthor?
After reading a lot of comics, you often start to root for the villains. It could be their history, their abilities, or just how cool they look. I definitely have a list of favorites that I wish were more popular – everything from funny Marvel characters to obscure enemies of Superman. Here are seven fantastic DC villains that I think deserve more recognition.
7) Scandal Savage

Most comic book fans know Vandal Savage, the seemingly immortal villain. But did you know he has a daughter? Her name is Scandal, and she’s a ruthless mercenary who helped start the modern version of the Secret Six team. Scandal is a complicated character – she’ll work as a hired gun for anyone, no matter how violent the job, but she’s also deeply affected by her troubled past and her difficult relationship with her father.
Scandal has been showing up more and more in DC Comics after being absent for a while. She was involved in the “Gotham War” storyline a few years ago, and now has a significant role as the leader of the Injustice Society in the JSA comics. However, despite this increased presence, she hasn’t reached the same level of popularity as her father, even though her appearance in the Secret Six series should have made her a major star.
6) Prometheus

The idea that Batman can accomplish anything if he has enough time to prepare has become a popular joke. But what if someone used that same ability for malicious purposes? That’s the core question explored with the character of Prometheus – especially the second, unnamed version. Prometheus was intentionally created as a dark mirror of Batman, sharing a similar backstory but using his resources and intellect to challenge the world. However, unlike Batman who strives for justice, Prometheus aims to completely dismantle law enforcement.
Prometheus is incredibly powerful – when he first fought the Justice League in JLA, he defeated each member by exploiting their individual weaknesses. It’s rare for a villain to accomplish that! Despite his impressive abilities, Prometheus hasn’t become as well-known or feared as he should. It’s surprising that a villain with his skillset – essentially an evil version of Batman – hasn’t gained a bigger following, but Prometheus definitely deserves more recognition.
5) Lord Havok

Marvel and DC Comics frequently borrow from each other, often creating characters that are obvious spoofs of existing ones. DC, for example, has Lord Havok, who is a parody of Marvel’s Doctor Doom. Like Doom, Lord Havok is a brilliant scientist and magician, and he often wears a high-tech suit of armor while using magic in battles against DC’s version of the Avengers, a team called the Champions of Angor.
DC Comics has had limited success with characters that mirror Marvel’s, like the way The Terrifics played off the Fantastic Four. Despite being a potentially great villain – essentially DC’s version of Doctor Doom – Lord Havok has never become a major character, even among dedicated DC fans. It’s a shame, because the concept has a lot of potential, but he’s often treated as an unimportant detail.
4) Queen Bee

Choosing the definitive Queen Bee is tricky, as several characters have held the title in DC Comics, ranging from small-time criminals with a bee theme to leaders of countries. However, the most well-known Queen Bee is Zazzala, an alien invader who travels the galaxy to expand her empire. As her name suggests, she can control bees with her mind and even create pollen that allows her to control others.
Queen Bee hasn’t become as popular as she could be, largely because her character has changed so much over time – she’s essentially had six different identities! However, she has a compelling mix of being genuinely threatening and uniquely interesting, which should make her a more appreciated villain. There’s something particularly scary about a villain who comes from the stars, and Queen Bee embodies that well.
3) Orca

The DC Universe features many characters who are part human, part animal – like Killer Croc, Man-Bat, and Cheetah. Grace Balin is one of them. After receiving a spinal tissue transplant from a killer whale to overcome paralysis, she gained the ability to transform into a powerful, whale-like creature. This transformation granted her immense strength and the ability to swim with the speed and skill of someone from Atlantis.
It’s frustrating that other animal-based villains in Gotham have become famous, but Orca hasn’t achieved the same level of recognition. Is she simply not as intimidating as villains like Killer Croc or Batman? Or is her concept just a little too unusual – though, honestly, in Gotham, there’s really no such thing as too unusual. I genuinely think Orca is a compelling villain, and it’s a shame she hasn’t become more popular.
2) Doctor Destiny

As a huge DC Comics fan, I always thought Doctor Destiny was a seriously underrated villain. It’s amazing to me that he was one of the first enemies the Justice League ever faced! But what really sets him apart is his power – that Dreamstone gave him the ability to control people’s dreams. It’s a genuinely terrifying ability, and honestly, it puts him right up there with nightmare-inducing villains like Freddy Krueger. He’s not just strong, he messes with your mind!
Doctor Destiny hasn’t been a major villain recently. In fact, during the Knight Terrors event, another villain, Insomnia, took over his signature ability, which could have been a big comeback for him. While the idea of a villain invading dreams is genuinely creepy, Doctor Destiny just hasn’t resonated with audiences.
1) Ultra-Humanite

While Lex Luthor is famous as Superman’s biggest enemy, the hero was troubled by the brilliant, yet mad, scientist known as the Ultra-Humanite for almost a year. Ultra-Humanite is incredibly intelligent – so much so that he’s found a way to avoid death by transferring his mind into the body of a gorilla, a form he’s maintained for nearly fifty years. He’s always working to improve his physical abilities, giving himself powers like telepathy and super strength.
It’s surprising that Ultra-Humanite isn’t more popular among Superman villains. It might be hard to get past the idea of a villain who’s essentially Lex Luthor trapped in an ape’s body, but I actually think that’s a fantastic concept. Plus, he was the very first enemy Superman ever faced! I really believe people will eventually recognize how great of a villain he is, and appreciate him as much as I do.
