The upcoming movie Wicked: For Good has cast its Dorothy, and while the choice might spark debate, it’s considered the best available option. Fans are eagerly awaiting this Wicked sequel, especially the inclusion of characters from The Wizard of Oz. Colman Domingo, an Oscar nominee, will voice the Cowardly Lion, and actors have also been chosen for the Tin Man and Scarecrow. That left Dorothy – famously played by Judy Garland in the 1939 film – as the last major role to fill.
Okay, so for ages everyone’s been buzzing about who would play Dorothy in the Wicked movie, and Taylor Swift’s name kept popping up! But Cynthia Erivo just let slip during interviews for Wicked: For Good that we actually won’t see Dorothy’s face on screen. Apparently, they’re not even casting a big name for the role, which is a bit surprising considering how amazing the rest of the cast is. Honestly, it sounds like a smart move for that particular character, though. It’ll be interesting to see how they pull it off!
‘Wicked: For Good’ Doesn’t Need Dorothy as a Main Character

Loew’s Incorporated
Dorothy is a beloved and instantly recognizable character, just as famous as the actress who played her, Judy Garland. However, while important to the overall story, her personal journey isn’t the main focus. From the perspective of Wicked: For Good, she’s an outside observer, used as a tool in a conflict she doesn’t fully grasp. Wicked isn’t a retelling of The Wizard of Oz; it’s the story of Elphaba and Glinda, and giving Dorothy too much attention would distract from their narrative. By obscuring her face, Wicked stays true to its own story and avoids becoming something it’s not.
As a fan, it’s fascinating to see new takes on The Wizard of Oz, but it also makes me a little uneasy. The stories about how Judy Garland was treated as a child during filming are heartbreaking, and with the movie Judy bringing that to light, I think filmmakers now have a real responsibility. It’s not just about protecting the Dorothy character, but being mindful of Judy Garland’s legacy and making sure anyone connected to that story is treated with respect. It adds a layer of complexity to the production, knowing the difficult history behind such a beloved film.
While others have portrayed Dorothy, casting a huge star like Taylor Swift could create unwanted attention around a delicate subject. By not showing Dorothy’s face, the new movie Wicked: For Good allows audiences to keep the image of Dorothy they’ve cherished for years. Judy Garland’s performance as Dorothy is iconic, and many viewers will understandably want to preserve that memory. Wicked: For Good is wisely choosing to tell its own story and letting the classic Dorothy remain untouched.
