I was really shocked by what happened in the latest episode of Mayor of Kingstown – seriously, no spoilers if you haven’t seen it yet! But it seems like even though his character, Carney, is gone, Lane Garrison isn’t leaving the world Taylor Sheridan has created. I’m excited to hear he’s moving on to another one of Sheridan’s shows! He played such a loyal and compelling prison guard, always backing up Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner), and I’m glad we’ll still get to see him.
In season 4, episode 2 of Mayor of Kingstown, Carney is unexpectedly killed by Cortez (Derek Rivera). This abruptly ends his character arc and leaves Mike without a key supporter.
In an interview with TV Insider about the death of his character, actor Garrett Garrison shared that he was surprised by the storyline. He also revealed that he immediately landed a role in Tulsa King, another show created by the same producer, on Paramount+. Here’s what Garrison had to say:
I was surprised too. I got a call from the show’s executive producer this summer, and those calls are always nerve-wracking. It’s either a promotion or a rejection. In this case, they told me my character was being killed off. They followed that up by saying they’d find me a role in their new show, ‘Tulsa King,’ which hasn’t happened yet. It was definitely a shock, but I appreciated them giving me a heads-up that my time on the show was limited. The most difficult part is saying goodbye to the cast and crew; they really become like family.
Garrison hasn’t learned much about his new part yet, but he’s thrilled about the possibility of working with Michael Beach, who was also in both Mayor of Kingstown and Tulsa King. While he’s excited to join Tulsa King and maybe future Taylor Sheridan projects like Landman, he did mention one thing that needs to happen before he appears in the Sylvester Stallone crime drama.
I actually just found out about this, so I’m not sure yet. I’m hoping it’s true, though, because Michael Beach, who was on my old show, is now on this one, and he’s one of my favorite people to work with. Maybe I’ll get a call about this show, or something else, but I’m definitely letting them know I won’t be dying on screen again. This was probably my sixteenth or seventeenth on-screen death, and it gets tiring! It’s actually more effort saying goodbye to everyone than it is to film the death scene itself. You get to know so many people on set – around 200, usually!
Garrison has worked with Taylor Sheridan before, previously appearing in both Mayor of Kingstown and four episodes of Yellowstone season 2. He’s now part of a growing group of actors – including James Jordan, Dawn Olivieri, Matt Gerald, and Nichole Galicia – who have each appeared in at least three of Sheridan’s shows.
As season 3 of Tulsa King continues on Paramount+, Sylvester Stallone is confirmed to return for season 4, which was already greenlit before season 3 even began. While details about his role are being kept secret, it’s been confirmed that his character will survive, unlike Dwight Carney, and will be back for more episodes.

Okay, so as a big fan of Taylor Sheridan, this is interesting. Just a week after we found out he’s moving his overall deal from Paramount to NBCUniversal, news broke that he’s still working with David Garrison on something! It’s not a clean break yet, though. Sheridan’s contract with Paramount actually runs all the way through 2028, and he doesn’t officially start with NBCUniversal until 2029. So, he’s juggling things for a while, which is good news for fans of his shows on Paramount, at least for the next few years.
Because of his contract to produce at least 20 shows for Peacock, Taylor Sheridan might create another series starring Jeremy Renner, potentially as the lead. However, if that happens, it’s likely several years away. Right now, you can see Renner in Paramount+’s Mayor of Kingstown and Yellowstone, and he’ll also be in the upcoming Tulsa King.
