Those who loved the 2004 film Shaun of the Dead have been hoping for a sequel for over 21 years, but director Edgar Wright recently indicated that one probably won’t happen. In a recent interview, Wright explained why he hasn’t started planning a follow-up, even though the studio behind the original film is on board with the idea.
Edgar Wright says he was never ‘really interested in’ doing Shaun of the Dead 2
Edgar Wright recently told Polygon that after the success of Shaun of the Dead, the studio immediately wanted a sequel. However, Wright chose not to make one, preferring to work on Hot Fuzz instead. He felt Shaun of the Dead worked best as a standalone film.
The director from England explained they didn’t see a need to continue, stating, ‘We felt the story had already been fully told.’
Edgar Wright explained his choice not to make a sequel to Shaun of the Dead, saying many franchises fail because the first film already tells the complete story. He pointed out that Shaun of the Dead shows a significant transformation for its main character, going from an unhappy person to a hero. Because of this complete arc, Wright felt it would be hard to create a compelling second movie with a natural storyline, and he’s content with the film remaining a standalone story.
Simon Pegg, known for his role as Shaun in Shaun of the Dead and a frequent partner of director Edgar Wright, recently shared similar thoughts about a potential sequel. In an interview earlier this year, the Star Trek actor explained that while he appreciates the continued popularity of the film, he believes Shaun of the Dead has a complete story arc. He worries that adding to it, much like what happened with Alien 3 following Aliens, could diminish the impact of the original.
