Ever since director Dan Trachtenberg made Prey in 2022, he’s shown a deep appreciation for the Predator universe. That movie expanded on the series’ backstory with nods to its history, and hinted at even bigger plans. The recent animated series, Predator: Killer of Killers, confirmed there’s a larger story arc being developed, connecting characters from Prey, Predator 2 (including Danny Glover’s character), and the original Predator featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger. And the creators aren’t finished building on that story yet.
The new movie, Predator: Badlands, is quite different from director Dan Trachtenberg’s previous films. Unlike other Predator movies where humans are the main focus, this one tells the story from the Predator’s perspective, showing its struggle for survival and its quest to prove itself. The trailer hinted at a possible connection to the Alien franchise, and many fans are curious about where this is heading. Thankfully, Trachtenberg has shared what the larger plan is.
The Modern Predator Franchise Is More Influenced by Marvel Than You Realize

During an interview with ComicBook to promote Predator: Badlands, we asked Dan Trachtenberg about the purpose of all the connections he was creating within the Predator franchise. His response drew a comparison to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which should help fans understand his overall plan.
The director explained that the success of The Avengers came from careful planning. It wasn’t released as one of the very first Marvel Cinematic Universe films, allowing audiences time to connect with each hero and their personal stories first. This way, when the characters finally teamed up, people already cared about them and their individual journeys, making the team-up feel earned and exciting.
When asked about fans comparing him to Kevin Feige, the mastermind behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Trachtenberg said he takes it as a compliment. He considers Feige a genius and acknowledges the unprecedented success of the Marvel films. He’s happy with the two Predator movies he’s made so far and is hoping to get the chance to make a third, though he’s waiting to see how that possibility develops.
With the success of recent installments like Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers, and the excitement around Predator: Badlands, the Predator franchise is stronger than ever. For years, the series has primarily appealed to a dedicated fanbase, but hasn’t broken into the mainstream. If future films continue this positive trend and resonate with audiences – and early signs suggest they will – Predator could become one of Hollywood’s next major science fiction franchises.
Predator: Badlands arrives in theaters this Friday.
