Avalanche Studios, the team behind the popular Just Cause games, recently faced a setback when a project they were developing was cancelled.
Contraband is a co-op game revealed in 2021, described as a world where players can live out their smuggling fantasies.
The game previously planned only for Xbox has been cancelled. This led some to believe the developers, Avalanche, might return to working on the popular Just Cause series, but it appears that’s not the case either.
Christofer Sundberg, a co-founder of Avalanche Studios who has since left the company, recently discussed the cancellation of Contraband and offered his ideas for a potential Just Cause 5 on social media.
My team and I first presented the concept for Contraband to Microsoft back in 2017, and they approved it. The game has evolved a lot since then, and it would have been great to eventually see it released. However, a fifth installment in the Just Cause series isn’t likely, as very few people from the original development team remain.
As a big Just Cause fan, it’s really disappointing to hear that a new game is unlikely. Apparently, most of the original team who made those awesome games have left Avalanche Studios, and that makes it tough to see another sequel happening.
Someone asked if a new Just Cause game could turn things around for Avalanche Studios, and honestly, I don’t think the CEO thinks so either. He basically said they don’t need another sequel – they need to rediscover what made them great. He wants them to be bold, take chances, and even ruffle some feathers making games people said couldn’t be done. He started the studio to break the rules, not follow them, and that’s what he wants to see happen again.
It doesn’t seem like we’ll be seeing a new Just Cause game anytime soon, despite it being a natural fit for the developers at Avalanche Studios.
What are your thoughts? Would you like to see a new Just Cause game – a fifth installment? Let us know in the comments!
