Just a few days after it started streaming on Netflix, actress Famke Janssen discussed how soon viewers might find out if “Amsterdam Empire” will be renewed for a second season. Janssen, widely recognized for her role in the “X-Men” films, stars in the new Dutch crime series as a singer whose crumbling marriage leads her to threaten to reveal the hidden secrets of her wealthy husband, who owns a coffee shop empire.
Following the release of the first season, actress Janssen shared her hopes for a second season, expressing her enthusiasm for continuing the show. In an interview with Decider, she stated she’d “love to do a Season 2,” but believes a decision won’t be made for a few weeks after the series airs.
Q: “It sounds like you would be open to doing a season two. Would you say yes if that call comes?”
I’m definitely interested in returning for a second season, and I’m contractually committed if Netflix decides to renew the show. They usually wait a couple of weeks after the series premieres to assess its performance before making a decision, but I’m optimistic about the possibility.
All seven episodes are currently available on Netflix. While a second season hasn’t been confirmed yet, it’s still a possibility.
The first season of Amsterdam Empire is a special project for Famke Janssen, as it’s her first time acting in a Dutch-language production and a return to her home country after many years. She stars in the series alongside Jacob Derwig, Elise Schaap, and Jade Olieberg.
How Likely is Amsterdam Empire Season 2?
Even though Famke Janssen has expressed interest in returning for a second season of Amsterdam Empire and has even signed a contract, whether the show actually gets made depends on Netflix’s decision to order more episodes.
Netflix uses viewership numbers to decide whether to renew shows for another season. How well a show performs directly impacts whether it gets a green light for future episodes.
I’ve been following Amsterdam Empire, and it just came out a few days ago, so it’s hard to say for sure if it’s doing well enough for another season yet. But honestly, the early signs are really encouraging, and I’m hoping we get a Season 2!
The series has consistently been among the top 10 most popular shows worldwide on the platform since October 31st. It initially debuted at number eight and has since risen to as high as number four, as of today.
While the show hasn’t become a major hit in the U.S. yet, it’s been very successful internationally, ranking in the Top 10 in many countries and even reaching number one in places like Belgium and the Netherlands.
If the show keeps up this strong start, breaks into the top 10 in the U.S., and maintains its popularity elsewhere, Netflix would likely at least consider making a second season.
Janssen indicated that a final decision won’t be made for several weeks. They’re waiting to see how viewers react to the new series before deciding what to do next.
