Despite mixed reviews, the action series starring Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone might not be over yet, even after 15 years. While critics haven’t loved the films, they’ve proven popular with streaming audiences, and after some uncertainty following the 2023 release, it looks like more action-packed installments are on the way.
Lionsgate now owns the rights to continue the Expendables franchise, whether through new movies or a TV series. While the studio previously distributed the last four films, they now have complete control of the property after reaching a deal with Millennium Media. This deal also includes the upcoming Rambo prequel with Noah Centineo. Although Lionsgate hasn’t announced any specific plans for The Expendables, with Sylvester Stallone taking a step back from action roles, Jason Statham could potentially take the lead in a future installment.
The latest installment in the Expendables series, featuring new cast member Megan Fox, received mixed reactions. Critics didn’t love it, giving it a low 14% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences were more forgiving with a 67% rating. However, positive audience feedback didn’t translate to strong ticket sales; the film only earned $37.9 million in theaters. Considering its $100 million production cost, this poor performance raised concerns about the future of the franchise, though Lionsgate appears to have plans for it to continue.
