Anime is known for its diverse range of stories and willingness to try new things, setting it apart from other forms of entertainment. As anime gains popularity worldwide, we’re seeing an even greater variety of creative concepts, animation styles, and worlds. While many popular anime series focus on fantasy, action, or science fiction, many other shows have become popular recently.
Good romance anime aren’t always easy to find in the mainstream. Many romance shows are seen as weak or lacking strong character development, particularly those with multiple love interests. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some truly wonderful and touching romance anime out there. Here are five amazing series you should definitely watch this year.
5) Honey Lemon Soda

Honey Lemon Soda is a 12-episode romance anime that premiered in 2025. Interestingly, it was adapted from a manga and actually followed a live-action series released in 2021. Despite its short length, the show is full of heartfelt moments as the main character experiences the ups and downs of high school and develops feelings for someone new. Honey Lemon Soda is a sweet and relatable coming-of-age story where romance plays a key role in the plot and how the characters grow.
The story centers on Uka Ishimori, a timid high school student who finds it hard to connect with others due to past bullying and social anxiety. Her life takes a turn when she meets Kai Miura, a well-liked boy, in a chance encounter – he accidentally spills lemon soda on her! This leads to an unlikely friendship, and Kai’s positive attitude helps Uka start to heal from her past. As they grow closer, Uka begins to develop romantic feelings for him.
4) Kowloon Generic Romance

Despite its name, Kowloon Generic Romance isn’t a typical love story. It blends romance with science fiction and mystery. The anime came out in 2025 and a live-action version premiered earlier this year. The show has a beautiful, detailed art style that feels nostalgic for early 2000s romance anime, but with a modern twist – it constantly plays with and subverts familiar tropes. If you enjoy shows with a creepy, intriguing vibe and characters you can connect with as they fall in love, you’ll likely love this one.
I’m completely hooked on Kowloon Generic Romance! It takes place in this incredibly detailed, futuristic version of Kowloon Walled City, and follows Reiko and Hajime, who are coworkers and starting to fall for each other. But things aren’t what they seem! Reiko starts noticing weird stuff about their connection, which leads her to investigate her own past. As she digs deeper, her reality starts to unravel, and she uncovers a really unsettling secret about a previous life she doesn’t remember at all. It’s a total mind-bender!
3) My Happy Marriage

I’m completely hooked on My Happy Marriage! It’s a romance that really gets under your skin because you see the characters change and grow so much throughout the story. It originally came out in 2023, and I was thrilled to see season two drop this year! What I love is that it blends fantasy into the story so well—it’s not about the magic, it enhances the beautiful romance. It tackles some tough subjects like abuse and trauma, but it’s never depressing. Instead, it focuses on the hope that Miyo finds through her marriage and her journey of self-acceptance and healing. It’s just a really lovely and moving story.
The story of My Happy Marriage centers on Miyo Saimori, who has endured years of mistreatment and humiliation from her family. Desperate to be rid of her, they force her into a marriage with Kiyoka Kudou, a powerful military commander known for his harshness. However, Kiyoka surprisingly treats Miyo with kindness and respect, allowing her to finally escape the shadow of her abusive family. This newfound freedom awakens hidden supernatural powers within Miyo – the ability to enter the dreams of others.
2) The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity

Released in 2025, the romance anime The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity has quickly become a hit. Viewers are eagerly hoping for a second season. The show explores important issues like prejudice and social class through a captivating story of forbidden love. Beyond its emotional depth, the anime is visually stunning, boasting some of the most beautiful animation in recent years, making it a truly enjoyable experience.
The story of The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity centers around a classic forbidden romance. Rintaro, who helps out at his family’s bakery, goes to a public high school known for its tough students. Kaoruko attends a private school and meets Rintaro when she visits the bakery. Despite the strong rivalry and animosity between their schools, they begin to develop feelings for each other and try to overcome the challenges that creates.
1) Blue Box

Released in late 2024 and concluding its first season in early 2025, Blue Box is an anime that successfully blends the excitement of sports stories with the sweetness of romance. A second season was quickly announced after the first finished airing. The show has gained a lot of attention and praise for its beautiful animation and well-developed characters. Blue Box offers a fresh and compelling look at typical high school life, focusing on themes of dreams and what it takes to achieve them.
Blue Box centers around Taiki Inomata, a high school student who has a crush on his basketball-star neighbor, Chinatsu Kano. When Chinatsu unexpectedly moves in with Taiki’s family, they grow closer. Inspired by Chinatsu, Taiki decides to take up badminton and improve his athletic ability, hoping to become someone she sees as an equal.
