5 Times Beast Was the Actual Worst

At one point, Beast held the title as the most cherished among the X-Men. He was the cheerful and joyful blue creature, often referred to as a “furball,” and was a faithful member of both the Avengers and various mutant groups during his lifetime. However, as time passed, things began to change for him. Following the Age of Apocalypse, he witnessed the potential consequences of embracing evil when Dark Beast emerged from that world. Matters worsened after Cyclops killed Professor X while under the influence of the Phoenix Force, causing Beast to assert his control over more and more mutants. By the time Krakoa arrived and the Quiet Council inadvertently placed him in charge of X-Force, he had reached a tipping point, transforming into a detestable villain. Yet, he continued to believe that his actions were for the sake of protecting mutants.

Instead of ruthlessly taking lives, displaying intentions towards genocide, and dictatorially commanding fellow mutants without regard for their abilities, here are instances where Beast’s actions made him appear as the least heroic figure among the mutant community.

1) Bringing The Original X-Men To The Future & Stranding Them There

After the tragic event in the 2012 ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ storyline, where Cyclops ended Professor X’s life, Beast experienced a difficult period. Under the influence of the Phoenix Force, it was actually Scott who committed the act of killing his longtime mentor, which further complicated Beast’s moral compass. In ‘All-New X-Men’ (2012) #1, driven by a flawed plan, Beast journeyed back in time to gather the original X-Men, including his younger self, and bring them to the present. However, he failed to consider all the potential consequences, resulting in the team becoming stranded there. The current X-Men were displeased with this decision as well, and eventually staged an intervention, asking Beast to step away from the team until he could comprehend that his actions were unethical and incorrect.

2) Began Working With Dark Beast To Bring Back Mutants

For years, Beast has been performing unethical acts in the name of scientific advancement. A virus called Legacy was wiping out mutants globally without any apparent cure. In such dire circumstances, Beast made a heart-wrenching decision by sacrificing a young mutant to Mister Sinister in an attempt to find a remedy. Things took a turn for the worse when years passed. Following the Scarlet Witch’s actions in House of M, most mutants lost their powers, and Beast sought a solution. This quest led him to remarkable heroes, but they couldn’t come up with a viable plan. In despair, he turned to villains. However, this alliance took a sinister turn when he began working closely with his evil counterpart, Dark Beast, from the Age of Apocalypse timeline. This collaboration served to illustrate what would happen if Beast abandoned all ethics and morals, and working with that version of himself hinted at the path he was treading towards.

3) Beast Mind Controlled Wolverine & Forced Him To Kill His Allies

As a devoted movie critic, I must say that the complex dynamics between two iconic X-Men characters, Beast and Wolverine, were brilliantly portrayed in the 2020 issue #26 of “Wolverine.” Initially, when Beast succumbed to darkness on Krakoa, it was none other than Wolverine who harbored an intense desire for vengeance. Even when the resurrected Beast from the Avengers-era came into play, Wolverine remained relentless in his pursuit, fearing that Beast might revert back to his Prime form and wreak havoc again.

The motive behind Wolverine’s vendetta was predictable given their history and ideological differences. In a calculated move, Beast sent Wolverine on a perilous mission, fully aware it was a trap. The climactic scene unfolded with Beast confronting Wolverine, ultimately leading to the tragic demise of the clawed mutant.

However, what followed next was nothing short of shocking. In secret, Beast resurrected Wolverine in his feral state, only to manipulate him into becoming a personal assassin. This puppet master tactic led Wolverine to attack and eliminate both allies and enemies alike, deepening the enmity between them. It’s no surprise that Wolverine harbored an unparalleled hatred for Beast among all mutants.

4) Beast Helped The Illuminati Destroy Several Alternate Earths

The Illuminati was established by Earth’s strongest superheroes who felt it necessary to manipulate events from the shadows in order to safeguard the planet. They engaged in questionable actions and were instrumental in creating both the “Secret Invasion” and “World War Hulk” storylines, along with other significant events. It was also predicted by them that incursions would occur, leading to the collision of various Earths and their eventual destruction. After Professor X’s demise, the Illuminati opted to have Beast join their ranks to represent mutants. In the “Worlds Collide” storyline, with Beast as a member, the Illuminati made the controversial decision to annihilate several alternate Earths in order to preserve their own, thereby causing widespread genocide on a grand scale.

5) Beast Unethically Overthrew Terra Verde

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’d rephrase it this way: In the epic saga of Krakoa, Beast, once an ally, plunged into villainy within the Wolverine comic book realm. When the inhabitants of Krakoa unearthed that Beast was imprisoning and forcing Wolverine to kill, they leaped into action to save Logan. As the truth unraveled, Beast escalated his heinous acts to hide his transgressions, culminating in his most egregious war crime. Seeking to outmaneuver Terra Verde, a rival exporter of plants, Beast manipulated the country’s resources through Krakoa. In an attempt to silence the President’s son, he tragically triggered a plant virus outbreak that ravaged the population. To maintain control, Beast mentally enslaved the entire nation, transforming them into his mindless pawns, marking him as the ultimate colonial oppressor. It took the telepathic intervention of Jean Grey to reveal the suffering he caused, but the devastation left in his wake was irreversible.
