Once Upon a Katamari revives the beloved Katamari series with a fresh game that captures the same quirky magic as the original PlayStation 2 titles.
This is still the wonderfully wacky Katamari Damacy we loved from 20 years ago – you roll a ball around levels, collecting tons of stuff to make it grow bigger and bigger.
Fans of the series will immediately recognize this game’s familiar feel, thanks to its level-based objectives, charming cutscenes, and easy-to-navigate worlds.
However, this iteration really comes into its own when it’s trying new stuff.
The game starts with a funny problem: the King of All Cosmos accidentally messes up time and space. This sends the Prince on a mission to fix everything and rebuild the universe, one star at a time – by rolling up objects into giant balls called katamaris.
The game features a diverse range of levels, spanning different historical eras—from feudal Japan and ancient Greece to the Stone Age—giving players plenty of unique environments and items to discover.
It’s a great idea executed well, and with all the humour you’d expect from the series.
Plus, the game now includes a variety of new power-ups that fit seamlessly into the existing gameplay.
The magnet is a popular choice because it easily pulls in nearby objects of the right size, helping you quickly make your katamari bigger.
You’ll find a rocket to boost your speed, a timer to temporarily stop enemies and moving parts, and a radar to help you locate valuable items.
These are neat additions that fit in nicely.
Overall, this is exactly what you’d expect from a Katamari game, and thankfully, it delivers a quality experience.
The game looks fantastic on PS5, with sharp, vibrant graphics and a consistently smooth frame rate of 60 frames per second. We didn’t experience any visual glitches or performance issues.
Just like previous remasters, Once Upon a Katamari proves that this series is still unique and incredibly fun. It feels just as innovative and exciting now as it did when it first came out over twenty years ago.
