Daisy Ridley’s New Movie Is Bad News For Rey’s Star Wars Return

Daisy Ridley is increasingly in demand, which is creating challenges for the planned Star Wars film featuring her character, Rey. At Star Wars Celebration 2023, Lucasfilm announced Rey’s return in a movie called “New Jedi Order,” directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. However, development on the film has been very slow. Lucasfilm has already released another Star Wars project, The Mandalorian and Grogu, and is currently filming yet another, while the Rey movie remains in early stages.

The future of Star Wars may depend on Rey. Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, is considered a key part of the franchise, and reports suggest she’s in talks for several upcoming movies. A new trilogy from Simon Kinberg is expected to be central to Lucasfilm’s plans, and fans have even wondered if Ridley might appear in Shawn Levy’s Starfighter, which is currently being filmed. However, Ridley’s availability for these projects is now uncertain due to other commitments, potentially delaying her return to the Star Wars universe.

Daisy Ridley Has A(nother) New Movie

Daisy Ridley has been working on several projects since her return to the Star Wars universe was announced. Her latest confirmed role is in Killer Bee, a film directed by Kenton Oxley, which is based on the incredible true story of Bryony Tyrell – an ICU nurse who became a professional MMA fighter. Ridley shared that she was deeply touched by Tyrell’s bravery and inspiring story, and is excited to portray her on screen.

I can definitely understand why Daisy Ridley signed on for Killer Bee. The frustrating part for Star Wars fans, though, is the timing. It looks like production on Killer Bee is scheduled to start in the spring of 2026 – somewhere between April and June. And Lucasfilm is planning to release a Star Wars film every year, with filming starting in August. That means Ridley will likely be tied up with Killer Bee right when they’re gearing up for the next Star Wars installment. It’s a bit of a scheduling conflict, and it might mean we won’t see her back in the galaxy far, far away as soon as we’d hoped.

If that’s true, it seems less likely Rey will be back in any future Star Wars projects. At most, Daisy Ridley might make a brief appearance, but probably won’t have a significant role.

Why Star Wars Is In No Hurry To Make Rey’s new Movie

Daisy Ridley doesn’t seem to be hurrying to reprise her role in Star Wars. While it was announced she’d return in 2023, there haven’t been any updates since then. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in February, Ridley said the delays are actually beneficial.

There’s been a lot of discussion about how release dates can impact a film’s production. Having the time to perfect the script and tell the story right is fantastic, and I’m sure fans would prefer quality over speed. The wait will definitely be worth it. Knowing what George is creating – he’s a truly gifted writer – I’m excited to read the script and confident it will all be worthwhile.

Daisy Ridley is right to feel optimistic about delays. Lucasfilm has rushed previous Star Wars films, and The Rise of Skywalker especially suffered from needing more time for revisions following Carrie Fisher’s death. It’s natural she’d want to avoid a repeat of that situation, which explains why she sees the delays as a positive thing.

However, Lucasfilm also doesn’t want to hurry the process. If Rey is truly the most valuable part of the Star Wars franchise, the studio needs to get her movie right – ensuring it’s a success, no matter which story they choose – Obaid-Chinoy’s or Kinberg’s. This likely explains why the studio is willing to take its time with the next era of Star Wars.

Right now, Ridley is benefiting greatly from this situation. She has a secure future working on a major film franchise, and she still gets to pursue her own creative projects, like Killing Bee. It’s a perfect scenario for her.
