It’s been 26 years since Universal Pictures brought The Mummy back to life as an action-packed horror film, and fans still love Brendan Fraser as Rick O’Connell and Rachel Weisz as Evelyn. While the two sequels weren’t as popular, the original movie has remained a favorite, even surviving the unsuccessful 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise. Now, exciting news: The Mummy franchise is officially returning, and Fraser and Weisz are set to reprise their iconic roles for a new adventure! And that’s not all – there’s even more good news on the way.
I’m so thrilled to hear that a fourth Mummy movie is happening! Not only are Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz coming back, which is amazing, but Sean Daniel is returning as producer too. But honestly, what has me most excited is the creative team behind the scenes. Apparently, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – the duo known as Radio Silence – are directing, and David Coggeshall, who’s written some really cool stuff like Orphan: First Kill and The Deliverance, is writing the script. It sounds like it’s in fantastic hands!
The Mummy Revival Has Found the Exact Right Directors

As a huge movie fan, I was so excited to see Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz back together! They first played Rick and Evie O’Connell way back in 1999’s The Mummy, and then again in The Mummy Returns just two years later. While there was another Mummy movie in 2008, Rachel didn’t come back for that one – Maria Bello took over. That means it’s been a full 24 years since we’ve seen them share the screen! And how amazing is it that both of them have won Oscars since then? It really makes this reunion feel special and long overdue. I’ve even read that Brendan has been wanting to revisit the role for years, which is awesome.
Okay, I’m really excited about the new movie bringing Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz back together, but honestly, what really has me hyped is the directing team. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett might not be household names yet, but trust me, these guys consistently deliver fantastic work. They’re the reason this feels like a legacy sequel that’s actually worth getting excited about, and not just a nostalgia trip.
In 2019, directors Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett achieved breakout success with the horror-comedy Ready or Not, starring Samara Weaving. Made for just $6 million, the film earned over $57 million in theaters, and a sequel is planned for next year. This success led to their next big opportunity: bringing the Scream franchise back to life. They directed both the 2022 Scream and 2023’s Scream VI, successfully updating the series for modern horror fans and proving they could take over an established franchise and continue its success.
As a huge horror fan, I was really impressed with what Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett did with the recent Scream movies. They clearly understood what made the originals work, but weren’t afraid to take the series in a fresh direction – and fans loved it! That success, especially with such a devoted fanbase, really proves they can handle a big franchise like The Mummy. What’s even more exciting is that this new Mummy film is going to be their biggest project yet, budget-wise. Seeing them tackle a true summer blockbuster could really showcase just how talented they are as filmmakers.
