10 Pieces of Black Mirror Technology That I Would Actually Use

Black Mirror, spanning seven series, an interactive film, and specials, showcases numerous imaginative, chilling, and thought-provoking technological scenarios for the future. These tales primarily serve as warnings about technology’s potential power to manipulate, punish, and even lead to tragic outcomes. The series is a harrowing anthology, with each episode exploring unique ways of coping with invasive tech. For the most part, these are technologies one would prefer not to see become widespread. However, as an individual with minimal trust in society, there are some episodes that could be entertaining until they start causing problems.

1) Coma Communication Tech

In the “Black Museum” episode, there’s a device called a communication box that allows someone to communicate in a simple way with a loved one who is in a coma. While the story takes this concept further and explores more extreme scenarios involving coma eternity and torture, the idea of being able to converse with a comatose loved one has its benefits. The device may not offer complex conversation, but it’s preferable to feelings of dread about existence.

2) Infinity Game

The technology and games featured in the “U.S.S. Callister” episode may become dangerous depending on how they are used, but overall, the concept is intriguing. You can create digital versions of people from your life or interact with others who are already in the game, resulting in intelligent beings within a virtual world that think, feel, and share experiences with you. Although the main character, played by Jesse Plemons, utilizes the game for personal gain, this technology could provide comfort to those grieving the loss of loved ones or offer opportunities to assume roles previously unattainable in reality. I’m definitely interested!

3) Hang the DJ App

Navigating the world of online dating can feel tedious. You’re required to craft a profile, select flattering photos, and share personal details – all in the hope that someone will take notice. Despite the effort put into this process, your fate often lies in the swipe of a finger, usually moving on to the next potential match. However, for some individuals, fortune favors them more than others. The storyline in “Hang the DJ” presents a bleak picture, but the concept of connecting with another person and sharing experiences before committing to an actual date is unique. Such a feature might entice people to give it a try, especially if it enhances the online dating experience by providing more insight into potential matches.

4) San Junipero Cloud

In simpler terms, “San Junipero” technology offers an opportunity for individuals with disabilities and those nearing death to transfer their consciousness into a virtual world, effectively granting them eternal life in a digital paradise. This is portrayed as a positive advancement without discussing potential environmental concerns or the need for any deception.

5) Z-Eye

We’re venturing into areas that raise some serious ethical questions. A high-powered device like the Z-Eye, similar to advanced wearable tech from Google or Meta, would enable users to read and send text messages, make phone calls, and potentially even block individuals they no longer wish to interact with. While this ability to cut off toxic people permanently could be a significant advantage, it’s important to consider the potential consequences, as demonstrated in the movie “White Christmas” when Jon Hamm’s character is blocked as punishment for being a sex offender. However, if this feature empowers individuals to protect themselves from harmful interactions, it could indeed be a game-changer.

6) Digital DNA Scanner

In “U.S.S. Callister” and its follow-up, a key element is the standalone DNA copier, which I’ve isolated for my specific uses because the potential to create avatars of living or deceased individuals is fascinating. Frankly, having virtual representations of your parents to consult about unanswered questions in life seems crucial to me. Unfortunately, some people pass away prematurely, but this could provide an opportunity to keep them close for a longer time. Ever wished to go fishing with your deceased father in a custom-made virtual realm? Make it so!

7) Consciousness Transfer

Taken from the episode “Black Museum,” this consciousness transference device allows one’s consciousness to be moved into another being. In the show, it results in Carrie inhabiting Jack’s mind before eventually residing within a monkey doll in limbo. While her fate may seem grim, the potential benefits are clear – especially for those facing death. If this technology were available to me, I would employ it for good purposes.

8) Grain

In the episode “The Entire History of You,” The Grain device could potentially be a significant issue if it truly existed, as portrayed in the story. For character Toby Kebbell, it becomes a nightmare scenario, but it doesn’t have to be. The key is maintaining secrecy about having the device implanted, lest someone discovers it and attempts to remove it, taking control of your life and potentially causing blindness. However, if you aren’t prone to obsession or the need to micromanage every detail, the advantages of this technology can be substantial. For instance, if you ever misplace your car keys, want to recall old friends, or desire to revisit key moments from your life, The Grain could prove incredibly useful.

9) “Metalhead” Dogs

If you’ve seen the series “Metalhead,” you understand this concept might be challenging. Currently, robotic dogs like those from Boston Dynamics offer a similar idea but are relatively mild compared to these advanced hunting machines. However, imagine if one day these mechanical creatures switched from evil to good. These helpful robots would protect and aid us instead of pursuing us without mercy. When they transform into allies, I’d be more than happy to sign up! They might even have better hygiene than most dogs, and you could even customize their appearance with a cute costume.

10) Cookie

Lastly, let’s discuss The Cookie – a term used for the AI currently being marketed by corporations to consumers in today’s world. However, it was also featured in the 2014 holiday special of “Black Mirror” titled “White Christmas.” These ‘cookies,’ or digital replicas housed within an egg-shaped device, function as home assistants, much like how we expect Google or other virtual assistants to operate. The unique aspect is that these cookies can be exact copies of you, trained and knowledgeable about your preferences and requirements. It’s a comforting thought, but it’s best to keep them away from institutions like prisons and retirement homes. After all, nobody desires an eternity of living a thousand years within each minute!
