A recent update to the Windows and Xbox apps temporarily disrupted how PC Game Pass families shared subscriptions. Previously, kids could sign into Windows with their own accounts (which allowed parents to set safety limits) while the Microsoft Store remained logged in with the parent’s Game Pass subscription. After the update, all three apps – Windows, the Microsoft Store, and the Xbox app – needed to be logged in with the same account for Game Pass games to launch. This forced families to have everyone use the parent’s Windows login.
A recent issue allowed users to bypass parental controls. This also caused problems for some players, as it sometimes replaced their saved game progress with empty files linked to the parent’s Windows account, then uploaded those blank files. Windows Central reported on this, noting that players lost progress in several games and support staff suggested the change was deliberate and being investigated.
Windows Central recently updated its reporting after Microsoft addressed an issue and released a fix. The problem briefly prevented some child Xbox accounts from signing in and accessing PC Game Pass. Microsoft stated they found a bug and have now resolved it. Players still experiencing issues should check for updates to the Xbox App and Gaming Services in the Microsoft Store.
The website points out that a proper Family plan for PC, instead of depending on temporary fixes within apps, would be a much better long-term solution, particularly as Xbox increasingly designs its system to resemble Windows.
If you’re experiencing this issue, it’s best to double-check the fix yourself. Make sure you have the latest versions of the Xbox app and Gaming Services from the Microsoft Store, have your child sign back into their Windows account, and verify their saved game data is still there (you can usually restore saves from within the game’s menus). If multiple people in your family share Xbox Game Pass on PC, remember that game saves are linked to the Windows/Microsoft Store account, not just the Xbox profile. Using different accounts can sometimes cause syncing problems, so it’s good to be aware of this if issues happen again.
While we appreciate the reversal of the changes, this situation highlights a fundamental issue: the system needs a much more reliable design for handling multiple users at once.
