Sony Pictures Classics will release a filmed version of the acclaimed musical Merrily We Roll Along, directed by Maria Friedman. The trailer is now available, offering a first look at Friedman’s innovative take on the four-time Tony Award-winning show and featuring standout performances from Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, Krystal Joy Brown, Katie Rose Clark, and Reg Rogers.

What’s Merrily we roll along about?

This musical follows the complex, thirty-year relationship between composer Franklin Shepard and his two close friends: writer Mary and playwright/lyricist Charley. First appearing on Broadway in 1981, it quickly became a beloved and innovative show, and features some of Stephen Sondheim’s most famous and deeply personal songs.

The award winning background to the musical….

The 2023-2024 Broadway production of Merrily We Roll Along, directed by Friedman, was a stunning reimagining of the classic musical. It brought Stephen Sondheim’s complex music and George Furth’s story to life with remarkable clarity and emotional depth. The production broke box office records at the Hudson Theatre and is now considered a major Broadway success. It won four Tony Awards in 2024, including Best Revival of a Musical and awards for leading and featured actors, as well as best orchestrations. Across the Atlantic, the production received unprecedented critical acclaim in London’s West End, earning the most five-star reviews ever recorded and winning the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival.

Merrily we roll along lands in cinemas on 5th December 2025.
