Director Edgar Wright recently talked about why he stepped away from making superhero films, especially after his work on Ant-Man. He shared how that experience influenced how he handles big-budget movies now, while promoting his upcoming film, The Running Man.
Edgar Wright on why he is on a superhero movie break after Ant-Man exit
While discussing his new film, The Running Man, on The Playlist’s Discourse Podcast, director Edgar Wright stated he has no regrets about leaving Marvel’s Ant-Man in 2015 and currently has no desire to revisit superhero movies.
He said he had no regrets about leaving the project. He’d begun working on it before the first Iron Man film, and by the time Iron Man was released, the franchise had already developed a strong identity, a consistent storyline, and a specific filmmaking style. He wanted the opportunity to work on something truly unique, and that was becoming increasingly difficult within the established framework.
Marvel hired Edgar Wright in 2006, roughly ten years before the Ant-Man movie was released, to direct and write the film. However, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe grew, the project changed. Wright ultimately left due to disagreements over the script, as Marvel’s own writers made alterations to the version he and Joe Cornish had written. Though some of his original concepts made it into the final movie, Paul Rudd and Adam McKay significantly revised the story’s tone and structure.
The director explained that after a few years, he started receiving scripts labeled as ‘revisionist superhero movies.’ He wondered if all superhero movies were becoming that way, and thought it would be more original to make a classic, straightforward superhero film. He jokingly said that even twelve years later, he was still taking a break from the genre, which he called a ‘cape break.’
During the discussion, Wright shared that he and Simon Pegg once brainstormed a “choose your own adventure” style version of Shaun of the Dead, where viewers’ choices would change the story. However, he admitted the idea was more appealing as a concept than something they would have actually created.
Wright’s upcoming film, The Running Man, will be released on November 14, 2025.
