This week sees the long-awaited release of “Superman”, and early responses are overwhelmingly favorable. It’s been more than ten years since the last standalone Superman movie hit theaters. The 2013 film, “Man of Steel“, was a grand Superman production, but it didn’t strike a chord with viewers at the time. Despite a substantial box office collection, the film was contentious due to its grim atmosphere and the controversial move of having Superman kill General Zod. Over time, Man of Steel has been reevaluated, but after “Batman v Superman” and “Justice League“, Warner Bros. held off on Superman for a while to let the controversy simmer down.
Currently, James Gunn is initiating a fresh start for the entire DC universe, beginning with the premiere of “Superman”. Given the legendary status of this character, there’s a great deal of anticipation surrounding this film, and if it proves to be a box office success or delivers quality content, it could pave the way for a prosperous future for DC. The fate of this movie is crucial, and Warner Bros. has invested significantly in its promotion. Preliminary reactions on social media have been overwhelmingly positive about “Superman”, and now, initial full-length reviews suggest that James Gunn has indeed hit the mark.
Superman Reviews Signal Bright Future For DC Universe
Initial responses for the latest “Superman” movie are flooding in with encouraging feedback. Currently, the film is scoring an impressive 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated Superman film within the series thus far. While there’s a possibility that it may lose a few points, if it maintains a rating of 89% or higher, it will continue to hold the title for the top live-action Superman movie. In his review, ComicBook’s Spencer Perry awarded the film 4 out of 5 stars, highlighting James Gunn’s effective direction of the character and expressing optimism about the future of the DC universe on the big screen.
Just like his other movies, James Gunn’s Superman features an exceptionally well-chosen cast, boasts stylish and thrilling action sequences, and carries a grace that DC fans have been eagerly anticipating in live-action form. In a time when audiences are somewhat fatigued by superhero stories, Superman seems to offer a refreshing remedy for this malaise.
IGN: 8/10
The new Superman film offers an exciting and emotionally resonant reboot for the Man of Steel, marking a fresh beginning for the DC universe on the silver screen. Director James Gunn, known as the mastermind behind the DC Universe, packs this movie with plenty of action and humor, assuming that our years of superhero movie-watching will help us navigate any narrative twists he makes to maintain a fast-paced, enjoyable experience. While it’s a complex and sometimes intense adventure, it seems fitting for the current cinematic climate.
Screen Rant: 4.5/5
Without a doubt, Superman will delight audiences who’ve been fans of superhero films for the past three decades, as well as those new to the genre or those who’ve taken a break recently. Watching Superman has left me eagerly anticipating what Gunn and Safran will create within the DC Universe.
Dexerto: 4/5
I’ve just watched a unique Superman film that surpasses many others in both its strengths and minor flaws. It’s grand, heartfelt, and it dispels the notion that the Man of Steel is dull. By the finale, you’ll find yourself convinced that James Gunn’s DC Universe has the power to soar. Lift your gaze and eagerly anticipate what lies ahead.
Collider: 8/10
In essence, it’s unusual for superhero movies to evoke a sense of awe and remind us of their potential beauty when skillfully made. However, Gunn has managed to reintroduce optimism, hope, and compassion into Superman’s storyline. As a result, this film emerges as one of the finest DC productions in years, and one of the best summer movies. This cinematic universe holds promise, and Gunn’s work provides a guiding light for where the DC Universe might head next.
SlashFilm: 8/10
Absolutely! “Indeed, ‘Superman’ often comes off as cheesy due to its main character’s corny nature – he’s a farm boy from Kansas who just happens to be an alien and saves animals in peril while enjoying less-than-impressive pop tunes. It’s not gritty or dark, but rather a delightful dose of lighthearted absurdity that left me with a wide, goofy grin. In today’s media world, this kind of audacious simplicity feels refreshingly daring.
Despite the overwhelming praise, there have been a few negative Superman reviews as well.
IndieWire: C+
It’s appropriate that Gunn acknowledges that a touch of goofiness contributes to Superman’s appeal, but in this case, it mainly interferes with the gravity of the situation at hand. Balancing humor and drama in a comic book adaptation can be challenging, much like appreciating Gunn’s effort. However, it becomes difficult to engage if the protagonist’s ability to fly lacks weight within the context of the story world.
Irish Times: 2/5
Gunn aims for top-notch junk, yet ends up with minimal wastefulness. It’s bereft of charm, lacks human connection, and about as amusing as a toothache.
Superman hits theaters on July 11th.
