Matt Smith is well-known for his work in science fiction and fantasy, having starred in shows like Doctor Who and House of the Dragon, as well as films like Terminator Genisys. He’s now joining the Star Wars universe with the upcoming film Starfighter, scheduled for release in 2027. Although filming began in August, Smith recently revealed something surprising about his involvement in the movie.
Matt Smith, known for playing the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who, recently shared with A Rabbit’s Foot that he hasn’t visited the set of the upcoming Starfighter movie yet. Unlike his co-stars Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray, he’s still waiting to begin filming. Here’s what Smith said:
We’re working on finding the right costume, and it can take a few days of wearing it to really know if it’s perfect. I’m planning a Star Wars-themed event in December, and we’re still figuring out the details of the costume.
It’s normal for actors to join a big film’s production at different times, but I’m surprised it’s taken almost six months for Matt Smith to start filming Star Wars: Starfighter. It makes me wonder how much more of the movie still needs to be shot by December. Will Smith have a significant role, or will it be a smaller one? While it doesn’t seem like he’s just making a quick cameo, I’m now questioning if he’ll only appear in a few scenes.

The team behind Star Wars: Starfighter are experienced, and I hope they successfully determine Matt Smith’s costume when he begins filming. Like the rest of the cast, we don’t yet know who Smith will play, but reports suggest it’s a villain. This role comes after Smith was previously considered for a part in The Rise of Skywalker around 2019, though he ultimately didn’t appear in the film.
The cast of Star Wars: Starfighter includes Ryan Gosling, Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. Gosling will play the lead role, protecting his young nephew (played by Smith) from dangerous enemies. The story takes place five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Shawn Levy is directing the film, based on a screenplay by Jonathan Tropper.
The new Star Wars film, Starfighter, will be released in theaters on May 28, 2027, following the return of Star Wars to the big screen a year earlier with The Mandalorian & Grogu. Matt Smith’s movie Caught Stealing is now available to rent or buy, and he will be back as Daemon Targaryen in Season 3 of House of the Dragon, which will air on HBO sometime in the future.
