As a huge Batman fan, I’m really excited about the new DC Universe James Gunn and Peter Safran are building! We know Batman will be showing up in The Brave and the Bold, and it sounds like he’ll have a whole history with sidekicks. They’ve confirmed Damian Wayne as Robin – he’ll be the fifth character to take on that role in the comics – and it really suggests Batman has worked with other Robins before him. Apparently, one of those past Robins could be a huge deal for how the DCU plays out, which is incredibly intriguing!
The character Robin first appeared in DC Comics in 1940 as eight-year-old acrobat Dick Grayson. Later, in 1984, Grayson grew up and became the independent hero Nightwing, protecting the city of Blüdhaven instead of working alongside Batman. With Batman joining the new DC Universe, fans are hoping to see Dick Grayson reprise his role as Nightwing as well. The DCU has already referenced Blüdhaven in the shows Creature Commandos and Peacemaker, making Nightwing’s appearance likely. Recently, artist @spdrmnkyxxiii shared artwork on Instagram envisioning young actor Mason Thames as the character.
Mason Thames Would Make a Great Nightwing in the DCU

Mason Thames, at 18 years old, would be a great choice to play an older, yet still young, Dick Grayson in the DC Universe. He’s already appeared in TV shows like For All Mankind, Evel, and Walker, and made his movie debut in the 2021 horror film The Black Phone, a role he revisited in 2025. He’s continued to build his career with parts in Monster Summer, Regretting You, and the live-action How to Train Your Dragon. As a promising young actor, it would be exciting to see Thames take on a major role in the DCU.
Dick Grayson, also known as Nightwing, previously led the Teen Titans in DC Comics, and the team is now heading to the big screen. Ana Noguiera is writing the live-action movie, and she’s already working on the upcoming Supergirl film with Millie Alcock, as well as a future Wonder Woman project. James Gunn and Peter Safran, the heads of DC Studios, clearly trust her storytelling abilities, which is exciting news for the Teen Titans movie. Many fans hope the film will feature Thames as Nightwing, leading the team.
Jacob Thames’s ballet training has given him the flexibility, endurance, and physical ability needed to play Dick Grayson, and his rising popularity could be a real benefit to the new DC Universe. He’s even publicly expressed interest in the role (according to @dcuworld), and with projects like The Brave and the Bold and a Teen Titans movie in development, he might soon get his chance. Seeing Thames as Nightwing would add a lot of depth to Batman’s story within the DCU.
