7 Original Comics That Would Make Incredible Sci-Fi Movies

The world of comic books is full of incredibly inventive and fresh ideas. Unlike movies, which often face criticism for lacking originality, comics consistently deliver new concepts. Comic creators have the freedom to explore any story they can imagine, and modern readers are enjoying diverse and exciting tales spanning genres like superheroes, horror, and science fiction. Recognizing this wealth of creativity, Hollywood has increasingly been adapting successful comic book series into films, such as Dredd and the Kingsman franchise.

A comic book’s worth isn’t based on its potential as a movie, but it’s true that many fantastic comics could be the basis for a great film—or even a whole series of films. This is especially true in the science fiction genre, which is known for being flexible and offering a wide range of stories, from spooky to hilarious. Here are seven comics I believe would make truly incredible movies.

7. Rook: Exodus

Rook: Exodus takes place on a planet reshaped by humans and centers around the Wardens – individuals who use technology to control animals. The series tackles relevant themes like environmentalism, the problems with late-stage capitalism, and economic hardship, all within a sci-fi setting. With a war between animal-controlling humans on a distant, troubled planet, it has the potential to be a fantastic movie with the right creative team.

6. Bitch Planet

Readers are drawn to bold and fearless stories, and Bitch Planet certainly fits that description. Set in a dark future, the story follows women labeled as troublemakers who are exiled to a harsh prison planet. It’s a unique blend of science fiction and the ‘women in prison’ genre, and it doesn’t hold back from tackling difficult themes like misogyny. The world of sci-fi needs more stories willing to challenge audiences and expose uncomfortable truths.

5. Billionaire Island

Given how frustrated people are with the gap between rich and poor, you might expect them to dislike anything that glorifies wealth. However, the new show Billionaire Island doesn’t do that at all. It’s a funny, satirical look at a near-future where the super-rich retreat to a high-tech island paradise, trying to avoid the world’s problems. But things quickly fall apart as cracks begin to appear in their perfect sanctuary and the realities they’ve been avoiding start to intrude. It’s a brilliantly funny concept for a show.

4. Cruel Universe

While Cruel Universe isn’t a single, continuous story, it’s a collection of short stories created by many talented writers and artists. That doesn’t mean it wouldn’t work as a movie! It could be similar to films like Heavy Metal or Creepshow, featuring adaptations of the best stories within Cruel Universe, such as “Automated,” which imagines a world controlled by self-driving vehicles. When done well, anthology films are fantastic, and Cruel Universe could offer sci-fi fans the diverse stories they’re looking for.

3. The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos

Though the story has some supernatural and horror elements, it centers around a brilliant but eccentric scientist. Despite its title, The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos is far from ordinary. It follows a young, queer genius who investigates a murder after his love interest dies. Christopher’s journey is captivating, and the series has received widespread acclaim, including an Eisner and GLAAD award nominations. Science fiction has a history of telling important and engaging stories, and a Christopher Chaos movie could be a powerful way to give a voice to communities that are often overlooked.

2. Divinity

If you haven’t heard of Divinity, you’re in for a treat! It’s one of the unique stories created when Valiant Entertainment relaunched in 2012, and it centers around Abram Adams, a Russian cosmonaut. After spending thirty years in space, Adams returns with incredible control over space and time. While Divinity connects to the broader Valiant Universe, it could easily be adapted as a standalone story. And for sci-fi fans, a story that fully leans into strange and cosmic themes – like Divinity does – would be a huge hit.

1. Assorted Crisis Events

Released earlier this year, Assorted Crisis Events is quickly becoming recognized as one of the best science fiction comics in recent memory. We often see how superheroes deal with massive, universe-altering events, but this comic focuses on regular people and how they cope with things like time loops and shifts in reality. It’s a collection of moving stories that explore what it means to be human when faced with the incomprehensible. Even a few of these stories would make a truly stunning and captivating film for sci-fi fans and general audiences alike.
