Science fiction is consistently a popular choice for moviegoers. People enjoy its imaginative stories and how it can draw them into different worlds while also tackling thought-provoking ideas about society and life. Often, great sci-fi films launch huge franchises and even inspire entirely new types of movies. For example, Star Wars led to a surge in epic space adventures, and Alien sparked a trend of scary sci-fi. While many successful sci-fi films get sequels, those follow-ups aren’t always as well-received or memorable as the original.
It’s common for sci-fi movie sequels to either exceed the quality of the first film, fall short, or simply be overlooked. There are many excellent sequels that don’t receive the recognition they deserve, becoming hidden gems or fading into obscurity compared to more popular films. These sequels deserve more appreciation from fans.
7) Predator 2 (1990)

Each Predator movie tends to divide audiences, but Predator 2 is particularly unique. Featuring Danny Glover as a world-weary LAPD detective, the film follows his investigation of a gang war that leads him to uncover the alien Predator. It’s a classic example of 90s sci-fi action, and while it might not be the most visually polished film in the series, its effects are well-done. It successfully builds on the original Predator, even if it doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves.
6) Escape From L.A. (1996)

Though not a classic, Escape from L.A. remains a highly enjoyable sci-fi film. As a follow-up to the 1981 hit Escape from New York, it once again stars Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, directed by John Carpenter. Despite a mixed reception when it came out, the film stands out as one of the most fun and exciting blockbusters of the 1990s, though it’s often overlooked now.
5) The Chronicles Of Riddick (2004)

Some fans think the Chronicles of Riddick series went on for too long and should have stopped after the first film. But if that had happened, we wouldn’t have gotten the exciting space adventure that followed Pitch Black, and we’d have missed out on exploring a truly unique anti-hero. Vin Diesel’s performance as Riddick in the sequel adds even more depth to the character. While the movie can be a bit over-the-top at times, it’s still a visually impressive and original sci-fi film that deserves more recognition.
4) Atlantis: Milo’s Return (2003)

The fact that Atlantis: Milo’s Return went straight to video is likely why it didn’t become very well-known. Although it continued the story of 2001’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire, this Disney sequel didn’t even achieve the modest success of the first film. However, because the original Atlantis has gained a dedicated cult following and is now considered a hidden gem of animated sci-fi, the enjoyable and visually appealing sequel is often forgotten. It’s a fun continuation of the story that, unfortunately, hasn’t received the attention it deserves.
3) Tron: Legacy (2010)

While the original Tron was often criticized for its quickly outdated special effects, the film is still fun to watch. Its sequel, Tron: Legacy, really took things to the next level. With stunning visuals that the first Tron couldn’t achieve and a fantastic cast, Tron: Legacy modernized the franchise. Despite being a highly enjoyable sci-fi sequel, it’s surprisingly often overlooked.
2) 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984)

Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey is famous for its frightening robot and groundbreaking filmmaking. Surprisingly, many people don’t realize it has a sequel, 2010: The Year We Make Contact. While the sequel features a strong cast – including Roy Scheider, Helen Mirren, Bob Balaban, and John Lithgow – it received mixed reviews, often measured against the success of the original. Despite being a visually impressive science fiction film in its own right, it’s rarely discussed among fans of the genre.
1) Futureworld (1976)

The 1973 film Westworld not only sparked one of the best science fiction TV shows of recent years, but it also had a sequel that’s largely been forgotten. Released in 1976, Futureworld continued the story but shifted its focus to an investigation of the mysterious Delos corporation. It was a remarkably prescient film for its time, which may explain why it isn’t discussed much now. However, Futureworld definitely deserves a second look from sci-fi fans.
